Tommy Armour 855s Hot Scott fairway wood Summary:
I have had a set of Tommy Armour 855s irons for some time, which has shared my bag with various Ping drivers and woods. I thought it would be fun to try the woods and driver that would have originally accompanied these irons and are of the same vintage. I assembled a 3 and 5 wood (and 10 deg. driver) between Ebay and a touring golf show. The 5 wood is True Temper Dynalite and the 3 wood is Tommy Armour Tour Step II. Both of these shafts have the same feel and similar step patterns. I have found these woods to be pretty easy and fun to hit, and have found I like the weight of these heads. I suppose this was about the pinnicle of the old cam-shaped head used for many years, before the thin-faced, lighter and larger heads took off. True, the distances are not as good as the modern clubs and the sound not as interesting at impact, but these are still forgiving and satisfying clubs. I have also found that these woods are pretty easy to hit from low lies in the grass on the fairway fringes (unlike the Pings). If I play long holes with a group, I'll play my modern driver and woods. Otherwise, I have ignored my titanium, large-head driver and woods and am enjoying these old-school gems. Customer Service:
