Saunton Golf Club - Golf courses, Braunton, Devon

DESCRIPTION

Saunton is a classic British links course situated in SW England on the coast of North Devon facing the Atlantic Ocean. There are in fact two eighteen hole courses at the club, the East (Championship Course)and West courses. Originally established in 1897, the existing East course was re-designed in the early 1920''s and by the end of that decade Saunton had gained a reputation as one of the finest links courses in Britain. Indeed the great Henry Cotton described it as "the finest links course never to have hosted the British Open".
In 1935 the West course was built undergoing a re-development in 1973.
The East course measures 6,779 yards from the Championship tees and is a true golf examination which becomes all the more testing when the wind blows. Those who have experienced true links golf will understand why ! The ability to manufacture shots, hit the ball low when required and a good putting game on fast undulating greens are all pre-requisites for scoring well on either course at Saunton. The West course measures 6,403 yards.

Saunton boasts a beautiful terraced clubhouse overlooking the 18th green of the East course, good dining and a very well stocked pro-shop.

Played this course for 3 days over March 2007 and it is superb and the only reason in my opinion that it has not hosted a British open is that it is not over 7000 yards and the local transport infrastructure would not meet the necessary requirements. The greens are tricky and fast and the ground undulating which is what you expect with a links course. The clubstaff are friendly as are the locals. The only downside is that i live to far away to make this a regular trip all in all play this course and i guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Whitewebbs Golf Course is a public course situated in the leafy suburbs of north London. It is a par 68 woodland course, so there is only one par 5 hole. However, there are a few long par 4s, and the fairways and greens are well maintained. It can be a tricky course with plenty of hazards, with quite a few water hazards dissecting the fairways. Some holes need a good drive to carry depressions or brooks and there are a few doglegs that will challenge the average golfer. Overall, it is a good course to practice your game in, but if you are after a tough challenge or are a low handicapp player, then look elsewhere as it is a fairly forgiving course.
