Shoots in the 80s

Played here 6-26-07; one of four AK courses I'll play this week. Course is OK, but nothing special, with the wonderful exception of the view from the first tee, which is AWESOME!! Tee box is elevated to a fairway which drops away about 100 feet, and the view is across the trees and the bay to the mountains on the other side. WOW! Unfortunately, the rest of the course does not live up to that promise. It's pretty enough, but the layout is not especially imaginative, except for a very few holes (#9 and #18 come to mind). 18 is billed as the toughest hole in Alaska, and it may well be: a narrow, uphill 422 yard (from the white tees) bear, with a fairway sloping from left to right: very hard for faders/slicers to stay out of the trees. Some elevation change, which is used well, and a bit of water which never really comes into play. Conditions were sub-prime: tee boxes, generally OK: fairways, very thin and patchy: first cut of rough very patchy and loaded with weeds: deeper rough thick and nasty: bunkers very firm, but playable: greens were just awful - very thin on grass, had been recently aerated, and were almost unplayable. Cart paths are unpaved. Course is walkable. It's a 50 minute drive from Anchorage, and not one I'd make again. If you're up in the valley, give it a try: it's better than the nearby Palmer course, which is reportedly having some problems this year. FYI, I was told that the winter of '06/'07 was very rough, so that undoubtedly affects current conditions. Green fees are about right: would not pay more for this course.

Customer Service

Excellent. Pro shop staff super nice and helpful, and Cadillac's, the snack bar/bar, has a reasonable sandwich menu and some great local beer on tap. Staff there was very nice, too.

Shoots in the 100s

Can be a little rough very early in the season (and who isn't in Alaska) but otherwise very well kept. The front nine is relatively flat, except the 9th, and straight, but there are some holes with a pond or marshy area, or a small group of trees to hit around to get to the green. The back nine does have some topographic relief, especially the 10th and 18th, but is still relatively straight. Again there are a few marshy areas and a pond to be avoided. Overall, the course is generally bounded by thich forested areas which can cause some nasty mosquito attacks in early and mid summer, so bring bug spray. Blue tee length is 6596 ft., white tee length is 6171 ft., red tee is 5461 ft. A very nice course

Course was in good condition, greens were a little sparse. Good elevation changes with raised tees and greens. Prcie is $30 plus cart, they do have discount days.
