Shoots in the 70s

Just came back from Rio Rico Country Club. Having played just about every course in Tucson, many in Phoenix and all in southern Arizona...this place and track is great. Can't beat the rates, value and TRACK. The recent reviewer that dogged this course must have shot in the 100's. This course is great, tree lined fairways, water hazzards and no houses. Pretty unusal. This is no frufru target course, just old fashioned RTJ layout. Tee boxes, fairways and greens (bent grass) are great, and I just played last week, with the seasonal rye grass still on its way out. As with all transitions (rye to bermuda and viceversa) there were areas that were a little sparse and to the untrained eye, looked dead. But this course was in great shape considering the time of year. I play alot at la paloma ($100+ green fees) and it is in no better shape. In fact, the greens at Rio Rico are far better, roll truer and hold more consistently. The fairway bunkers are a little firm, but whose aren't. You need to watch the roughs...the landing areas off the tee are fine, but if you hit it 40-50 yards right or left, expect to be hunting for it but, that's golf.

Customer Service

Great, no issues.

Hard to compare, RTJ senior courses are not a dime a dozen and the layout here is really spectacular. No Houses!!!

Shoots in the 80s

I read the 2 reviews posted here prior to my round... and thought back to them in disbelief as I played the front 9. The term "goat track" came to mind- the front 9 is uninspiring at best. Straight, little intrigue, horrible rough conditions. Once I reached the back 9, I started to understand why the other golfers praised Rio Rico. 10-18 are impressive- pretty tree-lined fairways requiring precise shot-making. However, the rough conditions on the back 9 were equally bad- they just let the weeds grow rampant off the fairway... And driving your cart in the rough is a jaw-rattling experience!
This is a tough course for women- there are two par 3's w/ water carry from tee to green... my bet is 80% of women won't be able to carry the distance. The front tees play almost 5700 yards.
The practice facilities were passable... healthy grass on the driving range, cheap (but dilapidated) range balls. Putting green is ok but small.
One very good feature about this course is the length- 7200 yds from the back tees, which is very long for this part of the world (where the vast majority of golfers are retirement-aged).
Keeping in mind the price i paid, this course is a decent value. My suspicion is there are other courses in close proximity that offer better conditions at perhaps a slightly higher price.

Customer Service

Customer service was mixed. The pro-staff knew who i was when i walked in the door (I think most golfers here are regulars) and were very friendly. The maintenance crew was a pain the tookus, w/ sprinklers running mid-fairway on a number of holes and staffers lingering about 200 yards out when you reached the tee box.

In this are i've only played Tubac Golf Club, which is excellent (but short). Rio Rico reminds me a little bit of 49ers country club in tucson.

This is a classic Robert Trent Jones Sr. course. It has all the familiar Jones tricks, numerous doglegs, elevation changes and a sprinkling of water hazards. A wonderful test that will not pick your pocket. Always about 10* cooler than the Phoenix area courses. A number of fine courses in the area and this is near the top.

Customer Service

Quality service, nice people in the pro shop and a nice little 19th hole to have a beverage after the round.

A great little resort about 5 miles away that is associated with the course. Sits on top of a hill over looking the valley.

The fact that nobody has reviewed this course does not surprise me. It's off the beaten path and is truly one of Arizona's hidden gems. Rio Rico combines championship golf with the flavor of the wild west. Bogey golf is acceptable here and the greens are among the fastest anywhere. Regardless of how you play, your day is a success if you par #8. Life is good when you sip a beer on the patio overlooking #18 with the San Cayetano mountains as a backdrop.

Customer Service

Adequate, nothing fancy
