The Golf Club Scottsdale - Golf courses, Scottsdale, AZ

DESCRIPTION

Exclusive private golf club in North Scottsdale. Designed by Jay Morrish and Dick Bailey. This course is located in a minimally developed portion of North Scottsdale, and has no houses adjoining the course. The holes wend their way from the valley floor up the side of desert peaks, with some enormous changes in elevation on some shots adding to the difficulty of the day. The multiple tee boxes range from around 5000 to 7550 for the championship tees. The views of the surrounding desert are spectacular. The course has full facilities- driving range, putting area, multiple short game greens.

The Golf Club of Scottsdale is a visually impressive course with elevation changes that become dramatic right after #14. The clubhouse and practice area are impressive. Main critique would center around hole #15. The hole is fairly ridiculous in what it demands and finishes up with a 3 tiered green for good measure. They do have caddies there-he got to see me on my worst day. He gave my wife an impromptu lesson and she was pounding her drives (it has since worn off). I question the value because the overall monthly fees are high and they need more members to really make a run. Really pretty course on a par with Estancia esthetically in my opinion.

I agree with most of the previous review, but would rate the quality of the golf course a notch lower. The first 12 or so holes are great- fantastic routing, nice changes in elevation, creative bunkering. My issues start around hole 13 or 14... right when you run across a sign that says "Gambler's Ridge" or something like that. Usually names on holes or sections of a golf course are a "sign" of bad things to come, and this is no exception. The routing here gets silly- you go shooting up and down the sides of a pretty substantial hill/mountain, with massive elevation changes and blind shots galore. There is a par 5 that is just horrible- you drive down about 100 feet to the fairway then your next two shots are up about 150 feet with carry in between. As one of my buddies said, "If i never have to play that hole again I'll be very happy." Unfortunately this section of the course just doesnt work IMHO. The last hole is a beast of a par 4, perhaps worthy of an "unfair" label. It's 500 yards from the back, with the first shot being uphill and the second on the flat. If you aren't tour long you aren't reaching this hole with anything less than a big driver and a big 3 wood.
This is definitely one of the better courses in the state, and would arguably been one of the very, very best if the designer hadn't flubbed up the last few holes.
One thing of note- this club has the best practice facility I've ever seen. The driving range is awesome, the putting green is solid, and the short game area is fantastic w/ multiple greens and places from which to do pitch and chip shots. If I had unlimited $$$ I would join here just for the sake of improving my game...

Customer Service

Very good, though last time I was there the staff seemed a little more subdued than usual.

Like the other reviewer, i've played a lot of private and public courses in town. The Phoenix valley is my favorite place to play in the world.
I disagree with the other reviewer about Troon Country Club, it's decent but has some similar routing/design issues to Golf Club Scottsdale. Troon is almost too hard at times. I agree about Desert Highlands, though, it is an incredible course. Too bad you have to buy a house or a lot to join.

Wonderful. This is one of the best golf courses in North Scottsdale and Arizona (on league with Desert Highlands and Troon). There are no homes adjoining the course. Facilities are the nicest I've seen on any golf course- the clubhouse is unbelievable and the on-course bathrooms are spectacular. The practice facilities are also fantastic. The course is very long- 7550 from the back tees, but plays very fair. It perhaps lacks some of the edginess which makes the hardest desert courses such a challenge; I think the best players may find the course a bit easier than some. Hard to describe, but most tee shots are to wide-open bowled fairways, and are usually straight away; the approaches are usually straightforward. The coolers full of food and beverages on the course were a very nice touch. Overall I loved this course and would love to play it many more times.

Customer Service

Service at this course is top notch. Classy operation, the manager deserves kudos for hiring such an excellent/professional staff.
