Shoots in the 80s

I don't believe the previous reviews gave the course design justice. I can't speak to the shape the course when they played it, but I'm really not in agreement with any of the previous reviews. First off, this course is not a links course. It does a few things reminiscent of links styling, but certainly not enough to be catogorized as one. Secondly, the design is not intended to make one lay-up and play a long second shot into the green. The course is also not a desert style where you have long carrys of desert before you reach the fairways, like many of the Palm Springs area courses. I would call this course a full fairway desert course, that utilizes it's natural surroundings while still always making you feel like your on a golf course. There are no condos lined down the fairways, and there are not gimmicks. Just solid design. Now this course is not easy at all if you cannot control the BIG DOG. However, it's always changing, so it's not one of these 3 Wood Only driving courses. In fact, several holes have massive landing areas for your driver, a few have very narrow landing areas, and some are moderate. Two holes are completely tree lined starting from about 100 yards out. The openings look like pinholes, but are more like 60 yards. Very intimidating, but if you just hit a reasonably accurate drive you are rewarded. The hole that is only 386 yards long from the Black tees on the 10th, and 357 yards on the 11th. Now the 15th hole is a 431 yard (from Blacks) par 4 that narrows to about 40 yards with desert bush on each side right at your landing area for your drive. You have to be able to hit your drive straight here, because a fade or a draw will give you zero room for error. BUT, if you make a good drive, the green is very receptive to quality approach shots. Very tough hole, but I managed to play it twice without a bogey. The 16th is a very high quality designed par 5. Only 530 from the blacks, but from 150 yards in there is massive pond protecting the green on the right side. The fairway is huge, so you can just pound your drive. Than your second shot is very interesting though. Be accurate! The last hole has a big trap splitting the 9th and 18th fairways. Keep your drive away from this (on the right), and hit a 7 iron in. Nice hole.

Our group probably played this course at the worst possible time of the year. It was just before they were ready to re-seed to get ready for the winter season, but the course was the worst I have ever seen. The fairways were nearly dead, the greens were variable from rock hard to moderately fast. They were so firm that it was virtually impossible to get a shot to stick. Add to this that the course was layed out in such a way that many fairways have hardly any safe landing areas for a drive. The fairways are generally narrow, with wasteland right to the edge of the fairway, and many fairways have bunkers right in the middle of an already narrow fairway. The designer apparently wanted people to repeatedly lay up on the first shot, then hit a very long second shot on par 4's. In short, I won't come back.

Shoot in the 90s

Played there in November, it was part of a golf package which made no difference to the staff, still were treated great. The course was spectacular, they had just reconditioned the course 6 weeks prior to our arrival. Very green and lush, fairways were like hitting off carpet, greens were challenging but true, tees were no exception. The wind and cold weather was a major disadvantage to this course, VERY windy and cold, recommend going in the summer or sping. The practice facility was very well maintained but mostly downhill, hard to calculate the distance without a rangefinder. Pro shop was nice, organized and well stocked, prices were reasonable, very friendly staff.

You wonder why they put such a nice course here. Must be cheap land. It is set in the middle of the Coachella Valley half way between Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs. Just down the way are the windmills. It's pretty much a links course. The layout is really very interesting, following the natural countours of the land, and it's kept in good shape. I haven't played it when the wind was really blowing, but I'd bet it would make a 15 stroke difference.
