The view from the 15th hole is just AMAZING. The hole itself, is a par 4 that's not challenging at all (you can easily drive the green if you're long), and I think they designed it that way so as not to prevent one from enjoying view. Almost all of the north bay is visible regardless of the weather. The view is so amazing, in large part, because this course was built on top of a small mountain. That said, you may want to take a cart, because walking this course could actually injure you if golf is the most vigorous exercise you get regularly. LCGC is comparable to Tilden Park (Berkeley, CA) in overall elevation and # and magnitude of elevation changes. But for a purist this is the best bang for your buck I've ever played. At $35 on weekdays it's difficult to match. Walking the course is physically demanding enough that it becomes an element of strategy and style of play. The holes themselves are imaginatively designed, with challenges not unlike those favored on Palmer designed courses; elevated par 3 at 10 dropping into a blind green, narrow chutes to elevated tees at 6,7 & 17 (windy!), gigantic par 5s with hidden and elevated greens at 3 & 12 and even a 700yd non-regulation par 6 to a blind elevated green at 18, that's challenging & fun rather than pointless or stupid (if it snowed in Oakland people would be snowboarding on this 18). The greens were in very good shape as of 12/04, and were fast and deceptively challenging. A couple of the holes are boring (narrow par 3 at 13 & the 15th(see above)), but can hurt you if you're not consistent. Not once, while playing Chabot, have I been distracted by the condition of the course... not once. There are still some imperfect sections that could use a landscape architect or something, but Chabot is 5 by 5 as far as playabilty goes. With greens fees as low as they are at Chabot, there are a number of local and area courses that should be ashamed of the greens fees they charge. (Monarch Bay, by comparison, is a flat linksesque course with appalling problems (6 hour rounds due to very poor clubhouse management, a pervasive odor of sewage on the course, and horrendous problems with the tee boxes and sand traps)).

Customer Service

Few employees, but pleasant and workmanlike in the clubhouse and on-course snack bar.

Maintenance has improved greatly the last year (2002) through now. There is an occasional rough spot on a green, but overall they are relatively smooth and challenging, especially for being a public course. Hilly - it's walkable, but quite a good workout.

I played this beautiful course that overlooks the Bay Area for the very first time. Enjoyed the 6th par 3 and the extremely long 18th par 6. Although the holes were hilly, I found the greens to be very challenging.

Customer Service

Overall a good value for 18 holes of golf. The course could be in better condition, but the tee times are usually available less than a week away. The main difficulty is the constant change of hitting off an elevated tee to a low midground and back up to an elevated green. The par-6 on the 18th and the 9th or 10th hole where you hit blind at a lowered tee are he most interesting holes.

I've played here twice and I liked the change of pace from most of the flat courses I play around the East Bay. Paid $27 with a cart. Very good price. Course isn't in bad shape either. Although the greens were spotted with this bright green herbicide that would get on your ball/putter/towel. Very hilly so get a cart. I did much better my 2nd time as we started early and the wind was minimal. The par 6 18th hole is something I've never seen before. I enjoyed my round(s) The city of Oakland is considering upgrading this course, so I suggest playing often before the course is closed and the prices go up!

Whatever you do, don't walk this course. It's very hilly, including the steepest downhill I've ever seen on the long, par-6 finishing hole. It has some fun holes because of those hills. Bring your touch during hot months, because, as the proshop manager whispered over the PA as we were about to tee of, "the greens are like sheet metal!" We wasn't lying either.

Customer Service

The course's customer service was fine.

Lake Chabot is a nice course with it's up and downs. The course is very hilly and the greens are spotted with herbisides which makes putting very difficult. The par 6, 18th hole is unique. It starts out flat but then goes down a steep slope then up a little slope to get to the green. Maintenence is a problem. The greens and tee's have a few chunks taken out of them but other than that they are ok. This course is owned by the City of Oakland.

Customer Service

Some workers seem overstressed and underpaid.

maintenance is the biggest word for this course. perhaps due to herbicides and sun, the greens are spotty and inconsistant. the challenge lies in the hilly nature of the course and blind tees.

Customer Service

the city is getting a senior pga event there within the next 5 years. the price may go up to $65
