Model Reviewed: Cypress Point Club

One of the greatest courses in the world. Immaculate fairways, beautiful strategic bunkering, and awesome views of the Pacific Ocean. Don't ever turn down a chance to play this beauty. 16th hole highly acclaimed, very difficult, and stunning, but Par 3 15th hole is a revelation! Walked across 17 Mile Drive to 15th tee and my jaw dropped wide open. Can there be a more beautiful golf hole in all the world? With the green sheltered by cypress trees on the left and the waves of the Pacific Ocean crashing below to the right, this is the tee shot of a lifetime. I bow before the greatness of architect Alister MacKenzie. This course lives up to its billing in spades! Another important point: Cypress Point is moderately difficult. Anyone with a handicap of 15 or below shouldn't have any major problems navigating throughout. You should get your fair share of pars and bogeys. The 16th might be the exception, but even it has a bail out area to the left.

Customer Service

Yes, exceptional service because you are playing one of the most exclusive clubs in America. On any typical day there will only be a few groups on the course.

The complete golf experience. As fine as the course is, the staff is even finer, and displays the gentility and humilty that I'm certain much of the membership lost long ago in their battles to become titans of the business world. I think Jim Langley should be nominated for Secretary of State -- he is an ambassador to the world in the finest sense! It is a tragedy that the Cypress experience is wasted on its membership, which already enjoys every perk known to mankind. It would be a great service for them to auction off to the public 10 or 20 rounds a day and give the proceeds to charity, and to auction additional rounds to be given to underprivledged juniors. The course hardly gets played. (Dream on!) This is golf heaven.

What a fantastic experience. Saw one other group on the course while we played. Requires every shot in the bag. Some holes demand long, straight shots, other holes require hitting specific areas. Absolutely the greatest golf experience.

What a treat this course is to play! It's so private, and with such a small membership, that few people play here on a regular basis. Just the way they like it.

But if you can ever beg your way on, do so by all means. I personally enjoyed the experience more than Augusta National, which I've also had the rare opportunity to play.

The setting of this course right at the Pacific's edge in Pebble Beach, the strategic design and the famous 16th hole over a Pacific inlet make Cypress Point a lifetime memory. In fact, holes 13 thru 17 are exquisite and right at the oceanfront, with 17 being another gem of design and location.

The 18th hole aside, this is Alister Mackenzie's masterpiece.
