It seems like a lot of Bay Area golfers like San Geronimo Golf Course and think it is a pretty tough course, such as the other two reviews on this site. But I am not a fan. One the bright side, it is a good bargain compared with other options in the area. It is in a beautiful setting up in the hills of Marin County. But this course has many shortcomings. It is in average condition with partially browned fairways (in summer) and shaggy greens. It plays pretty short and forces you to play 3 woods and long-irons of off several tees. There are a few “tricky” holes where local knowledge is necessary. What makes the course somewhat challenging is some of the holes are quite narrow and there is a lot Out of Bounds (O.B.) and the greens are tiny. It is a good value and a good time but nothing to get too excited about.

Played on a Thursday morning in May. The course was in the best shape that I have ever seen it in. The new super is doing a very good job. The greens were in good condition, which I never could have said before.

Unfortunately, we had to end our round early as it became apparent that we could never finish in under 5.5 hours (this was Thursday morning, not Saturday). San Geronimo really packs them in. As we rode out the final holes in the cart on the way back to our car, we noticed that each group was playing about 1/2 a hole slow. This isn't a huge problem in itself, but with the pro shop sending groups out every 7 minutes or so, it really clogs up the course. We spoke to a few marshalls, but I don't believe they took any action.

San Geronimo is a bargain at the $45 we paid, but given the small number of golf options in Marin and the proximity of San Geronimo to San Francisco, I think they would do much better raising their prices and spacing the groups out by 15 minutes or so. If I could finish my round in around 4.5 hours, I might actually be inclined to go into the clubhouse and have lunch.

As nice as this course is, until they deal with the pace of play issue, I will not be playing there again.

A good challanging course with fast greens in nice setting. Best to play during the week, weekends get very slow. Can get windy, especially in the afternoon, making it a very tough course. Probably the toughest public course in Marin County.
