The Penmar course feels like the local park in the neighborhood you frequented as a child. The greens and the condition of the course is the nicest among the LA city owned courses. The course is flat and there's plenty of noise from the small planes passing over. A good place to practice your game.

Customer Service

Not friendly and one starter was extremely slow.

Where do I begin???

Okay I'll get the nice stuff out first. Reasonable track if you consider it a "practice" round. I played miserably and shot a 40 here - it's a very easy layout. You will not lose any golf balls on this one.

It's of some value because it is cheap - but you get what you pay for...

Customer Service

Completely unremarkable...

I don't know what everyone is crying about, Penmar is a great little course for $11.00. There's absolutely NO WHERE in the City of Los Angeles where you can play a round under 3 hours (and we're talking 9 holes). If you're a scratch golfer, then go pay $175 at the new Pete Dye course in Simi (enjoy the traffic on the 405).

As for the course itself, it's pretty good. Sure, the greens are flatter than my wife (and that's saying a lot), but they're pretty well maintained. There's even a good amount of "real" rough around every green.

As mentioned by another reviewer here, the 5th hole is easily the most challenging. Indeed, it's 180 straight into the wind and it's uphill and there's a fairly large bunker right in front of the green. If you're right or left of the green, you're in big trouble. This is one of the most difficult par threes I've come across (almost worth the $11 for this hole alone).

If you're looking to get out and hit the ball around, Penmar is a great course. A mile from the beach and six holes where you've got to hit driver. If you're looking for fast play, like everyone in Los Angeles, you're not going to find it here (though I suggest going out at 4:45 for the fastest pace).

I live walking distance from this track and play it from time to time. It's not really worth $11 weekdays. The greens are ABSOLUTELY FLAT -- I promise you, there's not a breaking putt to be found out here -- and they're cut longer than some fairways I've seen. It's a good place to take beginners. Wide open and hackers abound. The par-3 5th is the toughest hole for my money; 170 -- 190 into a wind that's always stronger than you think.

Enjoy your 2.75 hour nine... more like 3.5 hours on weekends.

All I can say is that this place has gone straight to hell ever since Curly Leon left. Where the hell am I gonna get some french fry soup now.

Oh yeah: all you old men sitting in the snack bar playing bridge, you need to join a real country club instead of pretending you own the place. It's a muni for the love of mike.
