Shoot in the 80s

This course was designed in the 1950's or so by a farmer who originally owned the land and who did not play golf. This goes a long way towards explaining some of the hole layouts. On a couple of holes on the back nine, you actually have to hit an iron off the tee due to abrupt doglegs, and then hit a wood into the green. The layout is so off the wall, people tend to make up their own design. On the first hole, for instance, experienced players aim at the wooded hill to the right of the fairway, knowing that the ball will roll over it and leave a wedge approach. You can also hit your approach shot straight into the trees to the right of the green and it will roll onto the green.

The owners are trying to renovate the place. They actually routed a couple of new holes to replace some of the stranger existing holes, but the couldnt get construction permits from the county. Looks like they are stuck with what they have for now. For the price you really can't complain too much. The greens are usually in very good shape, also

Customer Service

The owners are very nice people.

The range is, well, not exactly grass, more like dirt, which is still better than a mat.

Shoot in the 80s

Since the late 1970's, I've played this course once a year when I'm in Santa Cruz on vacation. This course is tucked away in Watsonville about 20 minutes from Santa Cruz. While this course may be a bit too "blue collar" for snobbier golfers, it is a gem for those that appreciate unique architecture and shotmaking diversity. However, be warned that this is a relatively inexpensive public course and, depending on the time of year, course conditions are generally less than those of $100+ courses. That said, I've never found the course to be unplayable or the greens to be unfair. As far as the layout, expect major elevation changes (rent a cart if you're out of shape), sidehill lies and many risk/reward tee shot choices. Back nine features 3 par threes, 3 par fives and 3 par fours.
