Black Gold Golf Club - Golf courses, Yorba Linda,

DESCRIPTION

New Arthur Hills course, opened around 2001, part of a large development of new homes in the hills of Yorba Linda on a Brown Field (reclaimed industrial land, in this case, oil drilling). Lots of elevation changes, and though it might be just my recollection, it seemed that nearly every approach was significantly uphill to the green - and the greens were very fast, and difficult to hold. A fair amount of blind shots. Par 3s especially difficult for me; I don''t have a soft-landing 210yd club so playing from the Blue tees left me with difficult choices. 6700 hards from the black, 6400 from the blue (71.6/130), 6000 from the white. Other reviews on the net feature some whining about slow play. We were not rushed or delayed ... but played a 5 hour round. Clubhouse includes a nice restaurant and a well-stocked pro shop. Carts (included and probably, justifiably mandatory) have GPS.

Shoots in the 80s

Played Black Gold in late January 10’. Black Gold has always been one of my favorite O.C. courses, although it is a bit pricey. Got on with an Internet deal, (click for tee times) which saved me 20 bucks. The course is in great shape, even after the heavy rains. A few muddy spots but overall, good. If you haven’t played it, the front nine is fairly simple with plenty of opportunities to get on your driver. The back nine is a bit tougher and has a few very tight, short holes that you’ll want to break out a long iron off the tee box. The greens are also in great shape; holds shots well and are pretty quick. My only gripe would have to be some of the fairway drop-offs. On a few holes, mostly on the back nine, your penalized for bombing a long drive. The fairways drop off leaving you a nasty down hill stance for your second shots. Also, many of the fairways are valleys that are cut way below the cart paths. Any shot off the fairway, (and not by much) will leave you with a ball that can be a foot and a half above or below your feet. Other than that, it’s a great place. Beautiful clubhouse and nice place just to grab a bite to eat. The staff is also very friendly and professional. If you check in early, they’ll give you a bucket of balls to warm up with. What’s also nice is the range is near the first tee. And what a great range, awesome hitting surface and music. You can almost back your cart up to your warm up spot. Make this one part of your regular golf rotation.

Shoots in the 90s

Nice course. Pricey on weekends, but somewhat normal for nice Orange County courses. Minimal water hazards, but plenty of OB if your shots stray too far from where they should be. Nice elevation changes, definitely an enjoyable course to play. Greens were EXTREMELY fast and somewhat intimidating. I 3 putted probably 8+ times (I rarely 3 putt greens). I typically shoot in the high 90's and still shot a legit 105 here. Was a really good experience, course was in great shape. Took about 5hrs to play, waited occaisionally on the tees, but nothing bad.

Customer Service

Great. Bag service, drink service, pre-ordered meals from your cart's GPS to be ready when you pull in from the front 9 for the turn, nice clubhouse. Great.

Shoots in the 80s

I've played this course several times and have not been happy with it. It's quite a short course and the greens have been in bad shape when I have played there. It's very hilly, but not that difficult. Very easy to hit the holmes that surroind the course.

Customer Service

They do have good service though
