Model Reviewed: Chestnut Hills Golf Course

This "could" be a great golf course but unfortunately, there are several things holding it back.

First, the positives: Beautifully maintained fairways and greens that you would expect from a medium-high-priced golf course in the Fort Wayne area. It has rolling hills, elevation changes, challenging shotmaking. The proshop is well-stocked, and all the people that work here are very pleasant to deal with.

Now for the negatives: The scorecards available are cheaply mass produced without pictures, maps, any color - the public courses around here spend more money on their scorecards. Usually this would not be a large problem, except that there are zero hole-maps on the tee's themselves too! There's no maps anywhere thus you'll be either spending a lot of time driving up ahead of your ball to see what to plan for - or you will definitely lose golf balls on nice shots because you won't know about the gully, water, sand, etc up ahead. The sand traps are not well maintained on every hole - some are nice, others are completely neglected. The tee boxes are horrible - unlevel and small, not taken care of, and in general just don't seem to fit with the course. Last two issues - there's huge powerlines running down the length of the 1st fairway - I've never ever seen this on a nice course before - a real eye-sore. Last but not least - this course is right next to train tracks - frequented enough that you will rumble and hear a train whistle at least once if not a few times during your round.

You would think these "issues" would somehow translate to a lower cost - but mysterious, they do not (even more mysterious is how there are $300K-$800K homes that line this course, especially since every train right next door blows the whistle 4 times as it passes - go figure - this in the City of Fort Wayne where you can buy a 2000-2500 square foot home for just $150K?!
