Shoots in the 80s

This course takes advantage of its open prairie setting by offering unusually wide holes. The extra fairway acreage keeps the course playable for the average golfer on a windy day – which is most days – but it also greatly enhances strategic interest by establishing multiple avenues and angles of play. Perhaps to partially offset the comfort of the added width, the architect used numerous depth perception ploys to intimidate or confuse the golfer. The bunkers vary from nasty little pots to sprawling waste areas, and many are placed to create options and make the golfer think. With the extra forgiveness off the tee, it is no surprise that the approach shots demand precision. Guarded by bunkers, hollows, collection areas, water, and bold contours, the greens are a stern test of iron play and short game skills. Turf conditions are always excellent with fast greens, although the bunker sand is heavy and often packed. A refreshing lack of containment mounding opens up scenic views across the fescue for much of the round. A bonus short hole is fun for one last closest-to-the-pin wager before heading to the clubhouse. Normal rates are a bit pricey but off-peak fees are more reasonable.
