The Carey Park golf course in Hutchinson, KS is one that I played a few times during the 80's while growing up in the area. I recently had the opportunity to play the course again, and was pleased to find several improvements.

The greens, once rock hard and basically terrible, have been completely re-done. They are now quite soft, and run very true. In my opinion they are a bit too soft, but they are greatly improved. Another addition is a greatly increased number of sand traps. There are now several, although none is especially deep or troublesome. Many of the new bunkers are fairway bunkers, some of which are difficult to see from the tee. The fairways have been improved as well. Fairways are predominantly bluegrass, although there are some moderately large patches of other grasses in places. Overall, though, the fairways are much, much improved over the past 15 years or so.

I don't believe I've played a course at this price level ($15 on a weekend) that was in better condition than this course was. In fact, I've played some courses that cost considerably more that were in worse shape.

The layout of the holes isn't my favorite, but then again the land the course sits on is as flat as a pancake. There are a nice mix of short and longer par 3's. There are also a nice mix of short and long par 4's. The par 5's are generally quite short and fairly easy to birdie. 2 of the 3 par 5's are less than 500 yds from the tips.

The course isn't particularly difficult, and the greens are fairly level although some have some subtle breaks. The green on #3 is quite severe though.

Customer Service

Easy to get a tee time, at least on the day we played
