The Cardinal Club - Golf courses, Simpsonville,

DESCRIPTION

Being that this club is the home course for the University of Louisville golf team as well as most all of the Louisville hotshots (i.e. Pitino, Jurich, Petrino, etc.), I assumed it would be posh and well manicured at the least. With prices inclusing a $25,000 initiation, $275 monthly dues and $50 greens fees, I would expect no less than a first rate establishment but both my partner and I searched for words sufficient to decribe the disappointment we had with the course design and condition as well as with the ineptitude of the staff in administering a simple 2-man best ball tourney. The staff was anal-retentive in wanting to control every step taken by each golfer to the point of making one feel unwelcome and untrusted. The course was rough and insufficiently marked for yardage. We fully expected GPS on each cart but easily visible markers would have been sufficient. The course was unchallenging and wide open and lacked a single solitary hole with character. I guess that I should stop here and say that were this course merely a reasonably priced public course, I might not be so critical of the design and condition but writing this review in the context of the caliber of course dictated by the pricing structure, I can only say that I can think of a hundred other courses I would choose to play even if the fees were the same. Additionally, course''s website is useless.

As the Head Professional at the Cardinal Club, I must take this opportunity on behalf of the entire staff and club members to correct some inaccuraciesand misconceptions in the previous review. 1st, the initiation fee at the Cardinal Club is $7500 not 25 K (never was). 2nd, GPS on carts is not the norm and should never be expected. 3rd, there are 150 yard poles(standind 4 ft in the air) in the middle of the fwy on all par 4's and 5's as well as over 400 sprinkler head tags with front/middle/back yardages on all holes. 4th, the 2 man best-ball tourney refered to was corporate event held on a Monday and orchestrated by event coordinators not professional golf personnel. The inept staff referred to may be the good people who volunteer their time and effort to put on charitable events such as this one. If stiff competition is the previous reviewers goal the PGA tour has qualifiers just about every Monday. 5th, the course architect, Spencer Holt(a protege of Art Hills and student of Golf Architecture) did a wonderful job designing the golf course considering the jokers from the University Club's of America(no longer in business) he had to work with. Lastly, the club has played host to 10 Intercollegiate events for both men and women, the '06 Kentucky State Amateur with the winner having a 54 hole total of -1 par, and currently hosting the '07 Men's Big East Championship. Feel free to contact anyone from Southern Miss, East Tennessee St., Georgia State, Marshall, South Florida(on the women's side) and Marquette, St. John's, Villinova, Cincinnati(on the men's side). I am sure they would be happy to talk with you about the time they have spent at the club. It is ridiculous that I even post this but feel it necessary for all who enjoy the club. Perhaps one day we can all be members at Augusta National.
