Shoots in the 80s

No matter how they may have dressed it up, the front 9 is still a cowfield. Had a group of 3 play here and none of us liked it when done. Slow pace of play was almost unendurable. Took us 30 minutes to get to tee box of hole #2. Total round took almost 5 1/2 hours and we didn't even stop at the turn.
Front 9 is newest part of course. Hardly any trees taller than 4 feet and lots of little water hazards that are placed to punish you if you miss the fairway. Back 9 is a little better due to it being part of the old course. More mature trees and a better feel to it but still nothing to get excited about.
Practice facilities are great. Big driving range, a 9 hole pitch and putt course, and a big putting green with a sand trap area for practice is nice. I will be going back to practice ther but won't be paying to play the course anytime soon.

Shoots in the 80s

This is a well conditioned course that''s a good value, especially for students. I play the majority of my golf here, because I still get the student discount (though I''ve been out for 4 years). The front 9 and back 9 are two totally different beasts. The front 9 is devoid of any mature trees, but lots of planting has been done, and the front 9 will play more difficult in 10 or 20 years. The lack of trees means that the wind coming off the Mississippi River will greatly affect play. The prevailing wind is from the south during most of the year, which is helpful on most of the holes. There are only 4 holes that play straight into the south wind, 3 of them areshort to medium par 4s, and 1 longish par 3. The 2 par 5s are both downwind, and are easily reachable with a mid iron after a well struck drive. Greens are relatively flat, with some subtle undulations, but no real downhill monster putts. The back 9, with the exception of #11, is a parkland course, with tree lined fairways, more elevated greens, and longer holes. Accuracy is at more of a premium, especially on the par 5 12th and par 4 14th. The 13th is a biatch, because it''s a 450+ yard par 4 straight into the wind. 15 is also difficult, because of a 90 degree dogleg left, that''s very difficult to carry due to tall trees and water at the corner. The greens are more elevated, and chipping is more difficult. Great par 5 finishing hole that takes 2 long accurate shots to get home in 2. Your best bet is to lay back for your approach shot, but that''s difficult as well due to large overhanging trees on the right, and water down the left side beginning at the 100 yard marker and extending down to the green.

Customer Service

Very nice. Mike (pro) and Jason (asst pro) are both great guys.

Shoot in the 80s

The front nine and the back nine at LSU plays like two completely different courses. This is due to the back nine being "left over" from the old golf course, which was closed in 97. The new front nine is characterized by very few trees, which often results in strong winds, and a quite hazardous 35' wide ditch which runs through the nine holes and crosses five of the fairways. Although adding an element of difficulty to the course, the lack of bridges across the drainage ditches make walking this front nine a pain in the @#$! One miss-hit, and you may have to walk nearly half a mile to get to your ball, then another half mile to get back to your fairway. The cart is definitely worth the extra few bucks on this one! Fairways are getting better every year and especially the greens are well maintained. Putting is generally very fast, although not too tricky as the green are large, flat and not elevated. Fairways are wide and with the exception of water, few hazards.
The back nine is a totally different story. Long, narrow fairways, lined with big "ball-eating" live oak and with small, elevated greens. I havae played this course almost 100 times and I have never shot lower on the back. The back nine, although, has much more character and is considerably more fun to play. (With the exception of the monster 470 yard, par 4 13th, which usually requires a 3 wood as a second shot and has a 8' elevated green the size of an peanut. A par here should be treated as a blessing.
Another nice feature of the course is the nine hole pitch-n-putt, next to the driving range. Very affordable and great for working on that short game!

Shoot in the 90s

The name of this course should officially be changed to the Cow Pasture. The front nine is in terrible need of some trees. And there are way too many random ditches. The back 9 plays very nicely. The driving range is always sandy. The pitch and putt facility is very nice, but should be free.
