Course was in EXCELLENT shape. This could be partly because the PGA Nationwide Tour just held their Melwood Prince George's County Open at the end of May. Enjoyed playing this course. Will be back soon.

Just thought I would correct what the previous rater said about the fairways. The course seeded the fairways to rye in early spring of this year. They were not "seeded" with bermuda. The wet spring resulted in very little germination. With no competition from the rye, the bermuda has returned. They will be overseeding again during Sept. with rye. The fairways should be good by early fall. The greens, tees and bunkers are in very good condition.

Shoots in the 80s

After a year of being closed/renovated the course opened 7/24/09. All new tee boxes were put in, five sets of tees, all excellent condition. Almost 7100 yards from the tips. Two part 3's on the back nine play at 250 yards. All the bunkers were worked on and a bunch of new bunkers were put in, new sand excellent condition.
All the greens were ripped up and re seeded, very good condition, undulating and fast. Grass on the sides of many holes were left to grow and you get the feeling of a links setting. Univ. of Maryland has had bermuda fairways for a number of years. Normally spotty conditions, although before the course closed they were in the best conditions I had seen. Bermuda just doesnt grow well this far north. Needs heat and dry conditions. So what did they do, they ripped up all the fairways which were in great condition, and what did they reseed with? You got it bermuda. Well with the wet cool spring and summer the bermuda has not grown. Fairways given the condition of the course were poor at best.
I spoke with the peoople in the clubhouse and they are overseeding with rye, but this will take months if not a year I would think. I can't understand the rationale to put in a grass that never has worked on this course.
All that said for $62.00 it is a definite play, and hopefully fairway condtions will improve shortly

U of MD GC is undergoing renovations and is closed through Spring 2009. Looks tremendous so far. The re-design is exciting...in keeping with the traditional design and layout with improved quality, some added length and difficulty, state-of-the-art green structures and drainage.

Customer Service

Always good. Membership offers are great bargains. Staff are great. Like a private club open to anyone.

Shoots in the 80s

This course is one of the gems of the DC metropolitan area. It is a traditional layout and features very fast greens through a woodland setting. The course is hard, but fair and has three of the toughest holes in the area in #1, #2, and #18. Elevated greens on a number of holes make club selection extraordinarily important. A couple of par threes in the 220 yard range are extrememly tough.

Customer Service

The staff at the course is the best in the area. The head pro, Jeff Maynor, is a true gentleman and a gracious host. Sean, Chris, and Murph, in the clubhouse offer outstanding service in getting a t-time, and when you arrive at the course. The new clubhouse offers exceptional value, good food, and a very nice cozy bar.

Shoot in the 80s

This traditional style course is a breath of fresh air from the courses being built today. It is open, yet challenging, with a number of elevated greens to shoot for. The bermuda fairways are starting to fill in since the warmer weather has finally arrived and the bent grass greens are in great shape. The course is semi private and well maintained. It is heavily played, but tee times are easy to get and the staff can't do enough to accommodate their clients.

Customer Service

The staff is exceptionally accomodating and thoughtful. Tee times are easy to get- though the course gets a lot of play, including outings. Members are given special considerations, but everyone is made to feel welcome.

Shoot in the 90s

This is a traditional, but challenging and long layout. It's one of the best muni's around certainly in PG county and MD. The setting is real nice in the rolling hills and woods. The bermuda greens can be real fast as well. It gets a lot of play, but holds up well. The fairways can be a bit thin before the common bermuda kicks in.
