The first hole is a 450 yard, dogleg left par 5, which allows you to get off to a good start with a birdie. The course also tends to avoid backups on the first tee by offering a fairly easy challenge. The fifth and fourteenth both require you to lay up short of water and pitch to a securely guarded green. The seventh is a 90 degree dogleg right which is drivable from the tee, if you can avoid the water and wetlands on the right. Hitting your 185 yd club on the tee shot will put you in the center of the fairway with a wedge to a huge green, and most likely a birdie 3. The par 5 first and 17th are reachable in 2, but there is risk/reward with deep rough and woods turning mistakes into bogeys. The greens fees are VERY reasonable for northern Michigan. Eighteen holes with a cart is $28. If you walk, you'll pay only a buck a hole!

The rough does tend to get a bit dry in the summer, but this may actually be a strength in disguise as it makes finding errant tee shots easy, and permits quite a bit of roll off the tee.

White Deer Country Club is a hidden gem in Houghton Lake, Michigan. The course is always in great shape, with lush fairways and greens cutting through some of the most beautiful woods in Northern Michigan. The rough does tend to get a bit dry in the summer. The course offers a good blend of distance holes, thinking holes, target golf, and birdie opportunities. You will use every club in the bag.

The staff are always very friendly and accomodating. The bar/grill in the clubhouse offers great food, and the best kilbasa this side of Chicago!

The putting green is huge, and rolls identically to the greens on the course. The clubhouse has tons of tables, making it a great place to sit and re-hash the round with your buddies. The food is great, and I often head over for lunch even if I'm not golfing.
