Shoot in the 90s

Accomplished players will want to look elsewhere (the Omaha area has many quality, *affordable* course).

This short little nine-hole executive (no par 5's) course is where I learned to play golf, and that experience wasn't unique to me. Built in the '20s , there is no sand, no water, no expensive maintenance going on at this course. On the other hand there are trees, wide open fairways and a great little 110 yard par 3 over a road that's fun to play. It's a hilly track, with a few fairways too close together: Slicers going for the 213 yard par four 5th -- and who wouldn't? -- are as likely to hit the teebox on the 4th as they are to actually land on the 5th green.

Except for some leagues after 5 PM on weekdays, there are no tee times -- everyone walks on and is put in the queue at the first tee. The last time I played it only cost $5.75 for 9 holes, plus an extra $3 to around a second time (if you don't mind six hour rounds).

If you are in Omaha and have graduated from the par 3 (pitch and putt) courses, this is definitely your next step -- you'll have lots of company. If you are a 9 handicap, you'd be better served to cross the river and try Fox Run in Council Bluffs, Shoreline in Carter Lake or Tregaron in Bellevue.

Shoot in the 90s

Spring Lake, a short 9 hole course, is a typical Muni. It is a good, cheap diversion from a full course, but it lacks imagination, care and management. Often, teeboxes are too close to greens, making a helmet and sharp eyes and ears a priority. Though I have played this course often with friends interested in getting a quick nine in, it is not anywhere close to a preferred place to play. Some attention by the Omaha Parks Dept. could make this an enjoyable place.
