Totally unpretentious, it's a great course for a family outing or a couple with different ability levels. Women, older golfers and beginners tend to love it. Excluding Saturdays and holidays, it's generally very uncrowded. The views of 6 mountains ranges are about as good as it gets east of the Rockies. Because it's on a hill, it's often wonderfully cooler than the neighboring valleys. And there's a reason it's called "Sunset."

It's short course and can get congested on a busy day. If you have images of a 7200 yard PGA championship course, you'll be very disappointed. Tee boxes are generally small, fairways are narrow, and the greens are small and surprisingly tricky due to the hilly terrain. The groundskeeping, though, is exellent for a small course with a 5 month season. The clubhouse is not full service in terms of retail and food and beverage, but all the basics are there. The Sunset Hill House, directly across the small country road offers a lounge and full-service restaurant.

The Sunset Hill Golf Course is NH's oldest 9-holer, in play as a designed course since 1897. It's short for a regulation course, just over 2000 yards and retains it's original layout and hazards. It's an easy course for golfers of nearly all ability levels to keep their ball in play, but tricky enough to challenge the short game of all but scratch golfers. 6 par fours, 3 par 3s. It's quite hilly and plays longer than its yardage suggests. Carts are available but many players prefer to walk and enjoy the views and setting.

Customer Service

The owners and staff just want you to have fun. On quiet days, if you want it, the pro will often offer a few minutes of complimentary golf lessons. Food and beverage service is very limited although there is a full bar and fine dining restaurant at the Sunset Hill House directly across the road. On marginal days you have to register at the Sunset Hill House and not the club house. At either end of the season, fees may be collected in an "honor jar."

The clubhouse is an historic architectural gem dating from 1900. Although showing its age, it's extremely charming and the owners have plans to restore it beginning in 2005. Look for a rather unique architecture, elaborate original beade board panalling inside, original light fixtures, the old lockers and the wear and tear of a 100+ years of shoes on the floors. Across the road is the Sunset Hill House offering an aclaimed fine dining restaurant, a casual tavern, a function facility, and guest rooms ranging from modest to luxurious.
