Golf courses get their heaviest play on weekends and we have a Greenkeeper who doesnt work on any of them. Why not? It could be because the County let him join a union and now they have to pay him overtime even though he is part of the management or it could be because they dont have the willpower to stagger his work schedule occasionally so he is at the Golf Course once in awhile on a weekend. The County lets him use a County truck and County gas to commute back and forth from his home every day so they should make one of his work days a weekend. I don't expect him there each and every weekend but I do expect to see him there sometimes, instead of never. What other Golf Course has a greenskeeper who works Monday to Friday only? Take a Monday off and come in on Saturday or Sunday. Take a Friday off and come in on Saturday or Sunday. We would like to meet you since we have only heard we have a greenkeeper but have never seen one. Judging from the poorly maintained areas around and on the greens I think it is just a false rumor anyway.
Perhaps if you made an attempt to learn how to play you would also have an idea of the frustrations we have to suffer every day at this poorly run and maintained Golf Course. The greens look nice from a distance but then we have to putt on them. They aren't nice to putt on with a stimpmeter speed of 3 to 4 and that is a generous speed on some days.
The US Open should hire this guy. I am sure the elite golfers would be just as thrilled with the 6 inch and higher grass surrounding all of the greens. Don't ever expect to see a second cut on the fringe. If you need some balls you should come to this golf course. After searching for a few minutes you will find some that have been lost just in back of the first and only cut fringe. All you will need is a rake to uncover them.
This past Sunday we had the pleasure of having 16 out of 18 greens with a pin placement within 5 feet of the fringe. Perhaps this is a new and novel way to preserve the center of all these greens. I would suggest roping off the center though because everybody had to walk back and forth across the entire green to putt. I am also assuming the ball was found if the green wasnt hit in regulation.
Yes, I know we can complain and we do. The standard answer from the club house on a weekend is either "consider it a challenge" or "tell the greenskeeper". Gee, what a great idea! Why don't we call him at home and ask him to commute here in the County truck and fill it up when he gets here so we can. What? We have to come back during the week? He isn't available during the weekend you say?
Greens fees have been rising every year along with the grass. The County is pouring a ton of money into new tees and an irrigation system. With this greenskeeper still working there I can only see higher grass for the money because he has never heard of lowering the blades on a lawn mower. Now he will be able to water the rough and get it really high if it would only quit falling over from its outrageous height. Instead of out of bounds stakes and hazard stakes I expect to see stakes around the greens to hold up the grass.
I think it is time for Passaic County to hire a greenskeeper. We need a greenskeeper who believes in doing his job, one who really cares about the game and how it is played and give us a course that is playable. The current greenskeeper is only interested in looks and not playability. He should get his resume in order, turn in the county truck and find a job as a landscaper.

Wow. I do not know where to begin. I played this course today ( The Blue Course) for the first time. Thank goodness I was being treated to a free round by a friend. I would have had to pay $70 including cart as a non resident. The money is not the issue. But paying $70 for this course would be one of the biggest cases of highway robbery ever! This is not high dollar golf. It is a course with little to no maintainence. The greens seem like crab grass mowed to look like a putting green. get out your hammer to putt these greens. I have seen par 3's in much better shape. Some tee boxes have planters next to them with tiny plants to beautify the tee area. It was almost funny, because everywhere else is crab grass. The course is short!!! even mis-directed tee shots can get you on most greens with a sand wedge. This is a great course if you are a beginner and live in the county. For that I think the cost is $16 mid week. For $16 you can not complain about the conditions. How can they improve the cost or buy sand for the sand traps on $16 green fees. The clubhouse is quite a shack and I have been told this was actually improved.. would not want to have seen the 'before' picture. If you are a resident of the county and want to just work on your swing... sure go ahead.. pay $16 bucks and swing away.... if you are looking for a quality course, look almost anywhere else to beat this. My value rating is a 1 if you are out of county... 5 if you are in county... I'll rate below for my status as out of county

For $15 dollars this is a very good value. Over the years it has improved 100% , bunkers are much btter , greens are very good, clubhouse and staff are fine.....just a few tee boxes need some work. Very crowded, but that's not their fault. Good courses at a low low price = big weekend crowds.

Customer Service

They have some many people to deal with , at times they are a bit short, but once they know you , they are really good people. Fred, John, Paul, Nick (Course Super) are great.

36 hole layout with decent conditions. Red is an ok course that plays about 6500 from the blues, which is not short for a par 69. Pretty good layout...never seem to play a hole like one youve already played. Blue course is much shorter and a little bit easier at only about 6100 and a par of 70. Dont expect to get country club-like conditions with meticulously grooms fairways and lightning fast greens. If you live in Passaic county, tough to beat the deal. Two courses makes it a nice choice if youre just looking for some solid golf.

Customer Service

Good. Some may seem a bit short tempered, but if u get to know them, they all almost all very nice.

This course is for beginning golfers. The tee boxes are so bad that you need a hammer to get a tee in the ground! The rangers are non-existent so the play is really, really slow. Many days it take 5 hours to finish a round. It''s always crowded.

Customer Service

Very good. Everyone is very pleasant and amicable.

This place is a joke! They say you can't wear shorts above your knees if you want to play there. This place is so bad, you should be able to play in your underwear. Word is that they tried to make it a $hithole for local livestock, but there were no grass for them to graze on. Actually, this place does have a redeeming quality: if you are training to be a groundskeeper or course owner, a couple of rounds on this course will show you what happens if you don't take care of a course.

Nasty conditions. Red is better LAYOUT. Slow play in 2000.
Not bad in 2001. Recession? Bad tee boxes. Expensive for
non-residence play. This place is great for retired
folks who are residents of Passaic County. Seniors pay
$7.00 per round. Hard to lose ball.

I joined as a cheap place to practice for a real course.

The course conditioning has improved over the last couple of years, most recently starting in 2000. But don't kid yourself, this course is still as close to dog track as you're going to get. The bunkers do not have any sand in them. Basically the bunkers are ground up dirt. The red gets easily flooded and has no drainage to speak of. The layout is more interesting on the red course. No one who plays there ever repairs ball marks or divots. On almost every fairway, I repair 2 or 3 other divots but it doesn't seem to help much.

Customer Service

The starters hold some tee time cards for their buddies. Ofter they get an attitude if you question them about anything.

They are in the process of redoing the restaurant area. They have recently opened up the shag field and started offering free balls. That is the best part about the course at this point.

They redid the inside of the club house where you purchase your greens fee. It would have been better to put that money into the course instead. Gotta wonder whos' palm got greased for that one...

There are 2 18 hole courses here (red and blue). The red is the more difficult course, with narrow fairways and more water. Play often moves very slow because of the many beginners that play (I have never played a round under 4 1/2 hours). The maintenence has gotten much better in recent years, although it could be much better. The tee boxes are always torn up, and you must often hit from a hard mat. The fairways are well-maintained, but often get very dried out. The bunkers are the worst part of this course! They are hardly ever groomed and often have standing water in them. The greens are usually well kept.
