Shoots in the 80s

Let me start by saying what a gem. The fairways and the greens are amazing and it was fun to play this great course. Since it was the first time I played I just wanted to mention a couple of things which can make this a better experience. Everybody I called at the state park before I went there said that the course is all out there in front of you which is really not the case. If I wasn't playing with people who had played this course, I would have been completely lost on many holes. They need to increase the number of yardage markers and place them on the edge of the fairways as well AND THEY SHOULD have a different color flag to specify the location i.e. red for front white for middle and blue for back...since all the greens or most of them are elevated its very difficult to guess where the pin really is. But this is a must play course and bring lot of BALLS with you.

This is my home course, and I love it more and more every year. It might not be the longest course in history, but the holes are very challenging and the wind is always up and blowing. A real test of a true Links course.

The course itself is immaculate. The recent rennovations by Rees Jones are really phenomenal and take advantage of the rolling hills throughout the course. The views are fantastic and on a clear day you can see clear out to the Atlantic and Gardiners Bay. The town is seasonal, so during the summer you'll need a tee-time, but during the off months you can walk on just about anytime of the day.

Customer Service

The maintenance guys are great. Everyone there is super friendly (possibly more so to me since I'm a local and a regular at the course) and they all love their golf. Kevin and Eric (the pros) are great guys and are extremely knowledgable. The drinks and all that are a bit pricey, but what do you expect when you come to the Hamptons?

I've played most of the top courses in the area including: Atlantic GC, Maidstone GC, The Bridge, LI National, East Hampton GC, Noyack GC and South Fork CC. I've also played most of the public courses including: Cherry Creek (Woods and Links courses), Calverton Links and a slew of others. I still love the Downs though. You can't beat it.

Usually when I visit NY I play Behtpage but this particular trip my sister and I ventured out to Montauk. The trip and the course were well worht the drive. We have a number of Robert Trent Jones courses here in the Phoenix area but none compare to this beauty. The sea, wind and scenery provide for an exceptional round of golf.

This course will test your game: off the tee, approach shots, chipping, putting, course maintenance, wind factoring and discipline. Despite it being located at the end of the island over 120 miles from Manhattan and surrounded on 3 sides by water the Downs is not easy to get on. Why? The nearest available 18 hole course costs over 100k for an initiation fee or you need to verify your family tree back to teh Mayflower. Golf at the Downs is less than fifty bucks with cart.

If you like dialing and redialing until your finger is blistered to get a 3:40pm tee time you'll love this reservation system. The walk on policy is fair and friendly (and quite competitive), the pro

When you think you have a golf game, come test it at Montauk downs. I play this course a lot and am still learning it. This course has everything. You can really open up your driver on a few holes, go for the green in two or layup and play it safe. Blind drives, long par threes, challenging water holes. There is only one "easy" hole on the course, the 11th. The wind can be a big factor as the course is on a high property unimpeded by the landscape. This would be a truley amazing course if the greens were kept in better shape. Its hard to fault the staff considering the amount of people who play the course, but its a shame anyway.

Shoot in the 80s

This is one of the nicest courses I have ever played on. Im still young, but I've played at a lot of courses. The opening hole is a good hole to start out on. It gives you a blind tee shot as you can't see into the valley you are hitting in to. There are many holes that look simple but can be very challenging. Number 4 is the hardest hole on the course, in my opinion. The tees point you toward the right side, and the fairways slope from left to right. Then your next shot will be to an elevated green which doesn't hold much. The whole course is challenging in one way or another. The course is kept in beautiful condition. The greens role true from wherever you are. The tees are in great shape and make you aim for the fairway instead of leading you. The proshop has everything you could want. All in all this course is worth its money and anyone who enjoys golf should play this course at least once. Be sure to make a tee time in the summer, but come anytime in the off-season.
