Shoots in the 80s
Model Reviewed: Currituck Clu

Played the course in mid Oct 05. They were having real problems with probably 5 greens where they were forcing you to play to a temporary flag. There are some beautiful holes along the sound on the back side, but many of the holes on the course are featureless. The fairways and greens lack definition. The price seemed steep for the course. That being said, this is probably the best course on OBX (there is not much high quality golf there). Be aware that you are not going to be playing a great links course, then wait to reach higher quality holes on the back.

The Currituck Club was a very nice course, GPS on golf carts are very easy to use and read creating a very unique experience. Tee boxes could use a little work and at the particular time I played (June 2005) the greens were a little slow compaired to other courses played that week. All in all and nice course to play, layout was very nice and some of the views were fantastic. Two downfalls I find with this place is; 1. the green fee which is very high, even compaired to other "tourist clubs" like Kilmarlic (Fantastic place!) and Nags Head (nice links style, great greens). 2. The staff at The Currituck Club could be a whole lot better. For what we paid in green fees (7 players with 2 rental sets totalled $1,000) the staff should have been alot more accomidating. One of the guys in our group is a novice and rented a set of clubs. He did in fact break a shaft on the club and brought it back to the club and told them. The guy told us no problem, dont worry about it. But after having a drink in the bar, some young guy from the pro shop chases us down and demands $85 U.S. to put another shaft in. I myself have been around custom fitting clubs for a number of years and told the guy to go to a local club fitter, buy a $6 True temper DG R300 and give the guy $10 to put it in. He insisted that he ship the club to Cobra/Titliest to have it done even though there was no warranty or reason to send it back. After a "discussion" the guy blows up in the main loby, tears up the paperwork and says" fine, forget it, no charge". I thank him only to be chased out by the cart boy yelling that if we ever go back we cant have rental clubs. Needless to say, we will not be going back, and I do feel that anybody that reads this post should take it for whats its worth and use your own judgment. My opinion though, wayyy overpriced and unfriendly staff make this place secondary to any other course in the area.

One of the best courses i have played, perfect condition on tees, fairways and in particular the greens. Interesting and changing holes. The new club house is supurb and fits the style of the area. Course is interesting and testing without being too frustrating. I know the price is standard for a good resort course but surely 90$ is too much for an out of season round.

Customer Service

Good but you fell they look down on you as a customer sometimes. Maintance staff could be oblivous to the golfers around them and slightly off-putting.

I play this course every year the first week of July and it is always in flawless condition. It is a little pricey- but hey it's a resort course. They tend to really fill it up with players tho pace of play moves along pretty well, and I am sure 4th of July is one of the busiest weeks of the year for them. My Criticism might be of the architect Mr. Rees Jones. More than any other designer his courses tend to look and play exactly the same. You can throw a blanket over the Currituck Club, The Green Course at the Golden Horseshoe, the original layout at Stoney Creek at Wintergreen. These are all the same course with different climate. They are all very nice, they just look so similar, and Rees- get over all the mounding along the fairway edges. Seems like he could use existing land and let that dictate hole design. Just not a big Rees Jones fan I guess. Currituck is a nice Course. Nobody from the Crossings in Richmond ever plays there. That is the measure of a great course in my opinion.

Seemed pretty nice- and they were way busy

I played this wonderful course in mid-March 2000.
Terrific ambiance, great range and practice facilities. The club house hadn't yet been build, but was, I believe, under construction.
The course was a pleasure to play. The greens had just been aireated, but were in remarkably good shape as were the tee blocks.
The ninth hole climbs to a green where you can see the ocean to the east and the sound to the west.
The back nine along the sound is especially memorable.
I'm really looking forward to playing Currituck this spring.

Customer Service

Customer focussed in the pro shop. Not player friendly on the course - not sure why the maintenance staff was so unaware of basic courtesy.

I played this course while on vacation at the Outer Banks in late July. The type of grass used in the rough is much different than in the midwest, which took a few holes to get use to. I enjoyed the layout and condition, but didn''t think the cost was out of line considering it''s a resort area. If you''re a hack and slash golfer, stay away as you will get frustrated.
