A beautiful course. Difficult but can be played and enjoyed. Greens, tees and fairways in great condition, I would enjoy playing again.

I really like this golf course. I've played it twice (most recently March '03) and it was in really good condition both times I played it. The greens roll true and fast (considering the time of year and conditions I was playing in) and are really interesting to putt. The staff is the most friendly of any in the Pinehurst area, and there are spotters all over the course to help locate tee shots on most of the holes that have blind shots. I don't consider it a difficult course (I'm not sure how it got a 150 slope from the back tees, as I've played much tougher courses that were in the 130's). The fairways are quite generous, but there is a lot of elevation change, and the greens have quite a bit of slope, but they are fair. The only people that I don't think would enjoy this course are those that can't consistantly carry it 150 off the tee (even from the short tees), or are terrible sand players. There is tons of sand (waste bunkers) on the course, and if you can't recover from the sand, it could be a long day. The only negative thing I can say about the course is the green on the par 5 13th. Some reviewers have mention that the course is tricked up, and the 13th is the only hole I can think of that really fits that description. The green is surrounded by 15-20 tall mounds, literally surrounded except for a 15 foot pathway through the right front of the green. Other than that 1 green, I thought the rest of the course was manageable, even for higher handicappers. This was the most enjoyable course on our trip that included Talomore (I really like this one as well), The Carolina, National and The Pit.

Played course for first time last year. It was unlike any other I've played before. Lots of blind shots but thanks to the yardage book given out we were able to manage. Can't wait til April to play it again having experienced it once.

Customer Service

Only negative comment would be the fact you had little time to grab a bite at the turn. Really keep things moving.

Perhaps the most visually stunning course I have played, yet also the most frustrating. I called it "gimmick golf" and stand by that assesment. Too many blind shots that even when struck well ensure a lost ball, and most of the putting greens are extremely wavy, to the point of being ridiculous. More like a mini-golf course in that regard. Still, well worth playing once, just be sure to have a full bag of balls when you start. Use the yardage guide the starter gives you, and play the correct tees for your skill level or it will be a VERY long and frustrating day. Also bring a camera!

Quite good.

The practice range was in good shape, but they should give the balls for free with what they charge for greens fees here.

Tobacco Road is definitely not your average golf course. It is stunning to look at and demands accurate shots. However, one must determine the right shot from the yardage book as there are a great number of blind tee and approach shots. It feels a bit like an amusement park at times and it will take several rounds to become familiar with what is behind the next dune or through a narrow (50ft) channel in the fairway. With all the sand and waste bunkers it felt a little like an Arizona course. It was an interesting change from more classic courses in the area that might prove a fun change on a week long trip but might be hard to take regularly

Customer Service

Very thorough and helpful.

Awesome course! Very scenic. You either love it or hate it, but it is not like the normal back and forth course. You've got to think about the shot you're going to hit and then hit it or be in trouble. One of my favorite in this area and I hope to play it again soon. It makes you play all of your clubs and shots in your bag. Lots of blind tees and greens. Yardage book.

Fun course to play, but can seem a bit strange at first. Many blind shots, but the yardage book helps out quite a bit. Very good condition as long as you don't spend too much time in the waste bunkers. The ball mark tool gift is something all course should emulate. This course is not as hard as it might appear at first. (Please note that the ratings part of this page will not allow me to select NO BALLS LOST which is the case after my three rounds here)

Excellent Course. A must play for anyone visiting NC area. The course is a beautiful layout, with several blind shots that make for some excitement. I have played this course several times & have found it to be very well maintained each outing. The Director Of Golf, Joe Gay & his staff do a great job of operating this facility.

Classy touch on the 16th hole: Barrel of apples that are iced down & always welcomed when we get to this hole.

Customer Service

The staff are very professional. They all make you feel welcome.

Quite a challenging course but a beauty nonetheless. All of us enjoyed the layout and blind shots. Strantz has done a fine carving job here and all should play. Reminded us at times of Ballybunion or Lahinch in Ireland.

Customer Service

We were the first group out and the pace was well-managed. Pro shop called ahead to our next course to ensure we were not passed up since we were running late.

No words can do justice the awesome beauty and drama that this course has to offer. I don't think I will ever in my life play such an incredible beauty of a course. The first hole is probably the most difficult on the course. You shoot through a narrow opening between two 1:1 sloping and massive hillsides about 40' high and you have to hit it around 170 to get through with only about 15 yards of a gap and thats 15 yards in the air. It's only 5 yards on the ground. If you make it, you are in another large bowl of fairway with another shot through a blind narrow gap of two large hillsides. All of the hills are covered with mounds of 2' high grass clumps that are impossible to find your balls in. There is just simply no room for errant shots. You will be in large waste areas ALOT. When I say large waste areas, I mean waste areas measured in acres, not square footage. There are a lot of forced carries about 160-170 yds. with waste area on one side and 30-40' steep grass clump hillsides on the other. There are very many blind approach shots where you have to shoot through narrow gaps between hills into a bowl with a very narrow green, or up a hill say, 30' or so to a blind green. Some of the waste areas you encounter may leave you with an elevation change of 30' just to get back up to the fairway. Once you play it, it is not so difficult as the first time. It is target golf epitomized, however. With all that being said, I will never visit North carolina without playing this course. It is so awesome beyond belief. http://www.tobaccoroadgolf.com/
