Spent a week in Columbus and also played Cooks Creek and Indian Springs. CT is a decent course with the ugliest (exterior) of any clubhouse (?building?) I have ever seen. It's surrounded in places by entry level condo's and homes ($150K) but they sit off the fairways a bit and didn't crowd the golf much. Compared with the above courses, CT is relatively flat and sedating...maintenance is good but not great...still a rather young course. Brush filled gully crosses one fairway (?13 or 14?)...looks wet but has a dry bottom and lots of golf balls for free. Course played like a really nice muni but not a resort level experience.

The first thing you will notice about this course is how fast the greens are. They are slick but true, and if you get the ball started on line it will go in the hole. There are no huge undulations however so you don't have to putt defensively.

The layout is typical Hurdzan with beautiful rolling fairways and strategically placed bunkers. No heavy rough but several natural (grown up) areas; lots of water; out of bounds on many holes.

The staff is friendly & helpful. You get a free small basket of range balls. Weekday rates are $45 including cart and weekend rates are $55 including cart.

This is a very well conditioned course from tee to green and you will especially enjoy putting on these greens.

Bravo to Hurdzan & Frye.

Restaurant has the best golf course hot dog I've ever had. Order on the 9th tee and the food is ready when you get to the clubhouse.

Shoot in the 90s

An excellent new addition in the Columbus area. Dr. Hurzdan is fast becoming the most prolific designer of central-Ohio golf courses, second only to Jack Kidwell. I don't think the design quite approaches the beauty of his Eaglesticks course in Zanesville, but I think it easily surpasses the Westchester course, his previous effort in this vicinity.

The course is broken into two very distinct nines. The first nine meanders through the new Cumberland Trail housing development, which is as yet not very far along. Note that the house prices are in the range of any of the cookie-cutter neighborhoods in central Ohio. However, a couple of our big hitters sprayed some shots well right into some of the unsold lots. The balls WOULD have hit houses had they been there. Many of these lots were ridiculously close to the fairways, and a prospective homeowner would be crazy to buy there (the view ain't worth the broken windows and dented siding!)

The second nine, however, is completely different. There isn't a house in sight as the course winds through the woods. From holes #12 through #15, no holes are visible except for the one that you are playing... in fact, you don't even know where the next hole is until you follow the cart path around. #12 is a really neat par 5, it looks tougher than it is. The tee shot must be kept in play to have a shot on the fairway for your second. These are nine beautiful golf holes.

Cumberland Trail wants to be known for the quality of its service and greens, and they are fully successful on both counts. We played on a damp day and the greens were still very slick. I'm not use to playing on these types of greens and accounted for my poor short game results this day (I'm definitely not complaining!). I give them a four for difficulty for their speed. Undulations are moderate at most, I didn't have one severe breaking putt all round.

They also have tremendous service. As you drive in, there are a group of employees waiting to remove your golf bag from your trunk. The green fees include range balls, and when your round is finished, employees will clean your clubs for you and place your bag back in your trunk. All of the employees I saw after my round asked how I enjoyed the course.

One final point... this site lists the green fee at less than $25. This is not true, fees are actually about twice as much including cart and range balls.

Customer Service

I had to change my tee time twice and the staff I spoke with on the phone were very accommodating.

Reasonable prices in the clubhouse, though Etna Township is dry so there are no beer sales (court case pending, however).
