Traveling down US 34 in western Nebraska one eventually comes to McCook, and the Heritage Hills Golf Course. Those stopping to play will not be disappointed. This course has been ranked in the top 100 public courses in the US.

This links style masterpiece is situated on some rolling sand hills west of town. There are numerous elevation changes and I would not recommend walking the course unless you are in very good physical condition. A golf car will make your round much more enjoyable.

A friend and I made the trip and found a course with well manicured fairways and greens. There are many blind approach shots due to the undulating terrain of the course. If possible, team up with locals to use a bit of their knowledge to save strokes by correctly placing your shots.

The greens are large and require accurate approach shots to the correct part of the green to avoid lengthy putts. The fairways and greens are very well bunkered and some practice with the sand wedge is a must prior to visiting Heritage Hills. A well placed fairway wood or iron off of many of the tees will serve you better than hitting a driver. The native “gorse” rough has swallowed many a ball and should be avoided at all costs.

The most challenging hole is the tough par 5, 14th. This hole is all uphill and plays like it is 700 yards long. Three very good shots will be required to get to the green. If the wind is out of the west you might need a bazooka to get on in regulation! The rest of the course lives up to its reputation as a very good test of golf. Bring your “A” game, lots of patience, and a few extra sleeves of golf balls.
