Shoots in the 80s

I played the Bandon Dunes course on Sunday August 26, 2001. The weather was sunny and low 70s, with a mild wind that picked up in the afternoon. I played the course twice, first from the green tees, then the black tees. In my opinion, the course was very good, but possibly not (at least currently) the very great course it has written up to be. First of all, the setting is quite stunning, and I highly recommend a trip to the southern Oregon coast for the beauty and solitude alone. The cousre integrates well into the surrounding landscape, and, other than a few of the greens and tee boxes, it did not appear that a substantial amount of earthwork was required. The fairways were trimmed rather tightly, like it''s scottish cousins. As another reviewer noted, they were unneccessaarily wide in places. I''m an 11 handicap, and I played the green tees without landing in a bunker or losing a ball. In my opinion, a few more strategic bunkers could be added to make the course a bit more devlish from these tees. However, many more bunkers came into play from the black tees. For a 10+ handicapper to score well on this course from the black tees, you have to pick your spots. For instance, I played No. 4 as a par 5 from the black tees and was fortunate enough to one putt for par. My biggest dissapointment was the greens, which were rather slow and a bit crusty. Last summer I took a golf tour to Scotland that included Kingsbairns, the great new golf course near St. Andrews. While I liked Bandon Dunes very much, it was not of the caliber of Kingsbairns. Finally, I must admit that I am not the greatest fan of links style golf, and I generally prefer parkland-type courses. That said, I can''t imagine an ardent golfer that wouldn''t enjoy Bandon Dunes.

Customer Service

The customer service was very good, and I did not encounter even the slightest bit of stuffy attitude.

By far the most beautiful course I've ever played. Golf's Most Holy Place in my opinion. The routing is perfect, especially how they meander around the dunes until the fourth hole, when, after a blind shot into the faiway, you turn the corner for your first real look at the Pacific Ocean. I had to stand there a minute and catch my breath. The design is very natural for the landscape which means a lot of gorse, fairway mounding and bunkering. The greens have dramatic contours to challenge putting. Only two holes stand out as less than perfect, the par 3 6th which seems to jut out of the ground unnaturally, and the unspectacular par 5 18th only because its the homeward hole and you have to leave the ocean behind you. Greens were not as "green" as the brochures, and they behave in a way that I'm not accustomed to. They're very hard and fast and even though they appeared almost brownish and unpredictable, they putted very true. Don't miss it.

Restaurant was excellent. A first class practice facility (seperate areas for driving, irons, pitching and trouble shots. plus the largest practice green I've ever seen.)
