The course is a walker's paradise: no long trudges between green and tee boxes. The greens are bent grass and well maintained, although the summers can be brutal in Florence. The club is private, and so there is relatively little traffic except for Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons.

The fairways and approaches don't offer much of a challenge to the golfer expecting water and sand. Some of the fairways, e.g., numbers 8 and 9, are fairly easily played, even for a high handicapper.

An older course, FCC golf course was constructed in 1929 in one of the few hilly areas of Florence, South Carolina. At that time, it was a true "country" club, but today FCC is located in the middle of one of the more exclusive neighborhoods in Florence. The eighteen holes have little water-hazard challenge, and the bunkers are kept to a minimum; it is the length of the holes that challenges most golfers, requiring a strong drive coupled with a long and accurate second shot to most of the par 4's.
