What a great track. Played here in 96 and it was my favorite course of all time. I was a bit dissapointed in the course this time. Still a great layout, with some awesome holes, but the greens were a little slower than I remembered.

Customer Service

No problems here. Pace of play was very good here.

Too bad for this club that they have a staff like Laura and Raleigh managing the Pro shop. Worst customer service i have ever experienced. Spend your money somewhere else.

Model Reviewed: Pawleys Plantation

Great layout, back 9 a little cramped. This is a beautiful course. Several signature holes that you will remember long after the round. Mr. Nicklaus did a nice job. There were a couple issues though. Greens on some holes (particularly the famed 13) had alot of bare spots (fungus???), and speed between greens was NOT consistent. Also, the back 9 seemed somewhat "shoehorned" in to maximize home values. You better hit it straight on the back, because it's OB left and OB right with houses lining every narrow fairway. Challenging track if playing well though. Torture if not.

Customer Service

We got a little attitude at the guard shack, but overall service was nice.

We played 5 Pawleys island courses, and I'd rank this #3 behind T.B. and Caledonia.

A terrific Jack design. If you are going to Myrtle Beach, and want to play a Jack course, play this one, it''s a must. (Forget Long Bay - see my review on that course). Beautiful course. Similar beauty with Caledonia. Tough course demanding accuracy at all times. The front 9 was relatively fair in difficulty, but the back 9 is where you pay the fiddler. Wait until you get to the 13th and 17th, both par 3''s. Teeing from a bridge cutting across the marsh to greens with 100% carry is a little scary (hit 17, but missed 13). The "breeze" can be a huge factor on these holes. No adjoining fairways makes you focus on your game and the hole you''re on. A great place to play. Highly recommended.

Customer Service

Good al around. Would like to see the vodka carts a little more however, especially on the back nine!

Great Scenic layout. Many holes have alot of areas to carry to get to the fairway.Course is very difficult if your not hitting it pure. Par 3s are really tough. Condition of course was very good. When full they make you tee off on the back nine first if your not a member. This makes it very difficult because the back side is really a killer and the first few holes are ball busters. Bring alot of balls even if your a good player.

For a Nicklaus design, you needed all of the shots here, not just a fade. Does not have the mounds of early Nicklaus design courses which is good. The course makes you think your way around if you want to score well. You can't just bomb the ball, you must put your tee shot in the proper position if you want to enter the green from the correct angle. Each hole was unique with no two the same. Greens ran at a moderate pace, approximately 8 on the Stimp. Tees were in good shape as were the fairways. See note below (weaknesses) on green condition on a couple of holes. The par 3's are great - the views, the shot needed, and the heart pounding. There are no bailout areas on the 3's. Overall, a very good course that is a treat to play. Play the correct tees for your handicap or you could be in for a long day.

Customer Service

Service was very good in the restaurant. All other aspects where we encountered someone service was fine.

Pro shop had a limited line of product with prices a little higher than most courses. Good restaurant with very fair pricing.

Shoot in the 80s

Before my trip in May, I last played Pawley's five years ago and didn't really like it. When we once again had Pawley's on the golf menu, I was not exactly thrilled. Sure, it was a good course in excellent condition. But it was very hard and even unfair, I thought.

What was I thinking?! After playing it again... I'm in love. The course is a tantalizing design of temptation, risk, and reward. The condition, as expected, was excellent but what I truly appreciated the second time around was the mental challenge. The course offers so many visual challenges and unique shots that one can't help but be intrigued while standing on virtually every tee.

The par 3's over the marshland are sinfully challenging. At first glance, it's a simple pitching wedge into the shorter of the par 3's. That is, if the wind isn't blowing or worse yet, shifting in various directions. The peninsula green is pretty large but tough to find nonetheless.
All of the fairways throughout the course are beautiful and the greens, perfect.

Top-notch from start to finish from the starter to the pro shop personnel to the bar and even the snack ladies.

I think the reason that I like the course so much more the second time around can be attributed to my improved game. A few years ago, I resented what I viewed as unfair punishment for marginal shots. Now, I was totally into the very unique challenges and the demand for some precise shots on the various holes. This may not be the most enjoyable experience for the novice, but for the more skilled player, alot of fun!
