Shoots in the 80s

Ah, Lions, home of the 6 hour round...it could be 35 degrees and it would still take you 5 hours to get around. Lions is an in-town, short, tree-lined "parkland" style course that is fun to play. For the long hitters numbers 9, 10, 11, and 18 are all driveable par 4s. This story has been told a million times, but here but it is anyway: Ben Hogan played an exhibition match here with Harvey Penick and Morris Williams. Hogan found hole #7 (now #16)challenging so now it is known as "Hogan's Hole." It's a tight par 4, not too long. You play a position shot with a long iron or 3-5 wood down to a small pond that has a small landing area. You can throw only 3-4 blankets on the flat landing areas - the rest is steeply sloped downhill. Trees are left, and trees and hardpan are right. Then you hit uphill -- about 130 yards -- to a very shaded green. Play #16 and Lions once so you can say you have. Story has it that Crenshaw's "Little Ben" putter was purchased out of the used club barrel in the Lions pro shop.

Can't hit your woods on the range. Some of those range balls have been around since Kite and Crenshaw teed it up here as young lads.
