Morris Williams has really upgraded in the past several years and is one of the top muni's in Texas. If you can score at MW, you can score anywhere. Lots of hills, up and down fairways, & the par 3's are no picnic. Nice mix of trees, sand, and water. Long irons a must to score well here- a true test of golf.

Customer Service

Pro shop is really friendly and gets walk ups out on the course pretty quick. The pro- Beth Cleckler- is the top woman golfer in Austin and runs a fine course.

I live near this course but don't play it much because I play weekend mornings and it's tough to get a time there. It has several very interesting holes and the previous reviewer is dead on... this is Austin's toughest muni. Many of the holes have high tee boxes, fairway that "valleys", and raised green making the course play longer than it is. Its condition has improved of late as well. Even so, I rarely play this course well. I shot an 88 at Bluebonnet a couple weeks ago but am lucky to break 100 at Mo Willy. It's a tough course.

I am writing the first review of Mo' Willie? -- amazing. First, for the uninitiated, Morris Williams was a great golfer in the 50's -- but his life was cut short in a plane crash. He had won many local tournaments, and some say he would have ranked up their with Kite and Crenshaw if he had had the chance to play professionally. Second cool thing about this course: the Southwest Conference use to play tournies here and the late great Payne Stewart of SMU won here in 1978. Colin Montgomerie from Houston Baptist said he like the course and stated it reminded him of courses back in Scotland. Make no mistake about it -- this is one of the toughest courses in Austin - forget about the muni category. I spent 10 year trying to figure out why it is so tough, and finally put it all together. It IS fairly wide open but is somewhat long, but that's not part of the reason for its difficulty. It's three or four other things. First, the fairways have many uneven lies, so even with a good to great drive, you are left with the ball above, below, or on a side hill. Two, the greens are crowned or sit on top of little hills, so if you miss it (especially if you short side it) you are left with an uphill pitch to a small green. Simply physics dictate that if you are pitching from a low spot to a higher spot, it is hard to get the ball to stop close to the pin. Third, it does get windy out there, but, hey, this is Texas. Four, about half the greens are 3-jack greens because they are severely pitched back to front (or vice versa on number 4) so if you are on the wrong side of the cup (number 11 and 12 come to mind) you are screwed. And the greens are undulating -- big time. Bottom line: I have played here for 15 years and rarely remember hitting it stiff and therefore have had few birdies: it is hard to get it close to the pins because of the crowned green design. You have to shape shots like Corey Pavin. You'll use every club in the bag. It is easily 2-3 strokes PER SIDE harder than Kizer, Clay, or Lions. No lie. A few years ago I would talk to golfer after golfer that would claim they played poorly at Mo' Willie because of the airport noise. Now that the airport has long moved to Bergstrom, what excuse do they have?

Customer Service

Good. If you play there long enough they will give you special treatment , let you play another 9 for free, stuff like that.
