Wildcat Highlands - Golf courses, Houston, Texas

Wildcat Highlands - Golf courses, Houston, Texas

DESCRIPTION

Wildcat has two 18-hole courses built upon a old oil field (hence the name Wildcat) and a newer landfill. Soil was dredged from the Lakes course and was used to cover the garbage mounds of the Highlands course. The old oil pumpjacks, pipelines, and tank batteries transect the numerous landfill mounds of the Highlands course. Basically one plays target golf from one high ground to the next, crossing the original low areas that are covered in brush now. Off the fairway and down the hills is probably a lost ball. Not carrying the ravines with a shot is a lost ball. The tees, fairways, traps, and greens are OK, but the arroyos and brush sites are ugly and unforgiving. Generally an ugly course itself, but with some nice skyline views of sports complexes and downtown Houston. Several tricked-up holes where a short drive is necessary to stay on the high ground, then a much longer carry is demanded to get across the barancas. The Highlands is not a good course for the beginner or intermediate player, and is not really much fun for the better player either. I played a scramble from the Blue tees last week, and while I was fortunate not to lose a ball, I found 26 looking for my teammates balls! That ought to tell you something. Play the Lakes course if you are at Wildcat.
