Shoots in the 80s

I moved from Midland in 1989. Hogan Park is the Midland city municipal course, and has evolved over the decades to a pretty nice 36-hole municipal course. I played it again in early March 2010 during a windstorm (common to the semi-desert) when it would have been in about as forelorn state as it would get, and was VERY pleased with the condition of the original 18 holes. Greens had been overseeded, the few traps had good sand and conditioning, and the tees and fairways had been maintained as well as possible during the bermuda grass dormant state. (Actually fewer weeds than my own country club course in the Houston area.) The afghanistan pine trees planted about two decades ago were now 30' tall, and the lower branches had been removed to reveal a classic tree shape. There are still too many cedars that will "eat" any ball that gets near them, and the rough is typical West Texas mesquite underbrush. Don't go there. There are only a couple of small ponds, but they were filled and clean. Several sets of tees; I played it from the mid-range at 6300 yards. For $15 to walk 18 holes in about 3 hours was a bargain. Lots of fond memories. I have not played the newer 18 holes.
