Shoots in the 80s

I played this course on July 5th, 2009. This was my first visit to this course designed by Roy Bechtol/Randy Russell and Lee Trevino. As I pulled into the parking lot, I was impressed with the clubhouse and adjacent buildings. They have the look and feel of the old west. The driving range is good. Carts, included in the greens fee, are equipped with GPS.

I really liked the design of all the holes which wind through typical south Texas mesquite brush and weedy pasture. There were a good number of hazards including numerous bunkers and several large ponds and wetland areas. The course was not flat and it had good variety among shot values. I played every club in my bag, but with the strange exception of my PW and 9i. I played from the second tees from the back at just over 6400 yds, and that seemed to play a little long. This course sits on the side of a gently sloping hill that faces the prevailing breezes. The day I played it was fairly calm, but a moderate to stiff wind could really make this course play tough with all else being equal. Shorter hitters should beware the tips. The course includes several holes with long forced carries from the boxes, so play the proper set of tees.

The greens are very large and not too severe, and they looked good. They had been aerated recently, so were a little bumpy. They should be very good normally. The rest of the course has suffered as most have in the south central Texas area due to the severe drought we are undergoing. However, thin lies in the fairway were never a problem.

For what should have been a very busy weekend, the pace of play was great, although I never saw a marshal out on the course.

This layout is a worthy contender among area courses in this price range. The Republic, Canyon Springs or Pecan Valley would rate as first choices over The Golf Club of Texas in this general price range, but don't pass this one up.

Customer Service

Pro shop staff were very friendly and outgoing. The on course cart girl was very friendly, courteous, and of course, pretty.

I saw design elements on this course that reminded me of Roy Kizer GC in Austin, also designed by Randy Russell.

Shoots in the 90s

I enjoyed this course last week. I had been wanting to give it a try for a while now, but it is a pretty long way from my house.(I believe it is the only Trevino design in Texas). Twilight rate was $35. Course and greens were great shape. Course is fairly open. I actually broke 90 for the first time ever here. Very enjoyable course, just wish it was closer.

Shoot in the 80s

Fairly new course just outside of San Antonio. The fairways and greens have always been in good shape since they opened. The course is a pretty wide open. You can really go after many of your drives. It's a good thing it's wide open, since once you're outside the first cut of rough your ball is gone - don't even bother looking, just take a drop. Outside of the rough is weeds, wildflowers and more weeds. And we're talking thick weeds. So don't miss the rough...errrr...fairways.

From the tips this is a long course. If you move up one set of tees it's a reasonable distance. Don't play the tips unless you can consistently drive the ball 275 in the fairway. The good news is that you can go after those drives.

Not much to look at around the course. No houses. No trees. No hills. Just weeds and wildflowers.

This course is about 15-18 miles from downtown San Antonio. It's a long haul from the north side of town. Is it worth the trip? If you've got the time for the drive, yes. But I'd probably rank this course in the middle of San Antonio's courses to play.

Shoot in the 80s

A beautiful new course. The greens are the best in the area until La Cantera finishes their Palmer design course. A links style course with high grass for rough and no trees. Good variety of approaches with some carry necessary on tee shot for a couple of holes. All in all a spectacular course.
