Shoots in the 80s
Model Reviewed: Pecan Valley GC

I thoroughly enjoyed playing the mature host of the '52 PGA. The beautiful pecan trees just accentuated the richness of the experience. The greens were in good shape(I played in early Feb) and fairways were fine. There was plenty of sand in the bunkers and some of the shots out of them were a real challenge. There is a lot more terrain change than I thought possible so you get a nice variation in shot requirements. All in all a great golfing experience. I'm sure to repeat it if I get back to San Antonio.

Guys I have played all over the world at some of the most prestigeous courses you could name and Pecan Valley tops my list. Hosting the PGA (you know the Major) in 1952 this is the most overlooked course in the S.A. area. I find the drive from Dallas well worth the weekend of playing this track and a must if you are in the area. The trees at this course are rivaled only by Oak Hills and perhaps Ft. Sam Houston. They have lost many since the flood in 98' but American Golf came in and cleaned things up including a full re-sod of the entire course and new club house - Though I must admit I liked the old one better. The Prices are incredible with, as mentioned in another review, replays in the same day vastly discounted and some nice twilight specials in the summer. Putting greens are nice and the final 4 holes are some of the most challenging you'll find...Anywhere. Can't say enough about Pecan Valley. If you are in the area and want to play a second rate course and pay 4 to 6 times as much that is up to you, this place is the best around.

Great, traditional golf course. Probably one of the most over-looked courses in San Antonio. They recently underwent a major series of improvements to the course and a brand new club house. Since that time, the course is incredible shape.

Very mature trees line this wonderful layout. But even with the hundred's of pecan trees on the course, you can still test your skills after an errant tee shot by playing a punch-and-run. Some great par 4's.

Greens are usually in excellent shape. Fairways and rough have imrpoved tremendously - they are working with the USGA to host the Public Links Championship in 2001.

Very inxpensive for the quality of course.

Played this course about a week after the 2001 Public Links Championship and the high rough just about killed my playing partner and me. It was in great shape and the rough should be back to normal by now.

Be sure to make time to play this course twice in the same day. Replays only cost you the re-rental of the cart which is about $15.00 or so. The course is much better the second time around as you know where to place tee shots and were not to try stupid ones.
