Shoots in the 80s

Decent layout, alot of O.B. Greens could have been better. I had fun, but will probably not make a special trip to go back. If I lived in that area, I would probably play there every weekend and be pretty happy, but its not worth the drive to me becuse this is a fairly simple muny course with mediocre greens. With a little TLC, this course could probably be a gem.

Well i was going to give this course a good rating....but after reading anothers review...i can only say what i saw when i played a few years back.It bordered the Gudalupe River and was pretty much a simple layout.Somewhat a challange but made for all handicaps.

Shoots in the 80s

What a waste of a good design. I played here often in the early to mid 1990s. Back then the course was in great shape, and I loved my excursions to Starcke. The greens were great. I went back in 2001 and 2003 and the greens were not up to par. I went BACK on April the 17th, 2004 and was STUNNED. The greens were in horrible shape, like getting an unending succession of triple bogeys. And I am not talking about a few brown patches here and there -- they were unplayable. They had no grass on them, only sand and divots. I don't know what happened, but they need to either re-do the greens entirely or hire a new greenskeeper. Deacon Palmer would roll over in his grave if he saw these greens. I drove an hour to play here, but on the phone they did not mention any trouble. But I commend the pro that gave me my money back -- no questions asked -- once I had complained loudly after only nine holes. But, if someday comes when they have redeemed themselves, Starcke is a good course with some long and memorable par 4s (#3 and #18) and some of the most spectacular pecan trees in Texas, hard by the Guadalupe River. I won't play here for at least two years, and I would call about course conditions prior to the trip from San Antone or Austin. Also do yourself a favor: do a Google search on Lefty Stackhouse (Ha! you think Steve Pate -- "Volcano" invented or perfected the the golfer's temper?) -- the spirit of this unique Texas golfer floats through the pecan trees like a Texas heat wave in August.

Customer Service

Friendly small-town service. Nice mix of locals: white, black, and brown. No "attitude" at all.
