Shoots in the 70s

The Raptor is now open and the greens on the front nine of the Eagle course have been re-done (will open in Spring 09'. The Raptor is great. Lots of bunkers everywhere. Fairways are pristine, greens are lightning fast. What a beautiful course. Cart path only for the first year. I walk, so it does not matter to me.

Shoots in the 80s

This is usually an easy wide-open, easy course to play. Unfortunately, the greens on the Eagle course are really torn up, felt like I was putting on a gravel road with a few potholes thrown in just for fun. I will not play here again until the 18-hole Raptor course reopens in few months.

Shoots in the 100s

“The Eagle” at Eaglewood Golf Course plays around the club house on the NASA side of the base and around the driving range along the flight line. “The Raptor” which is currently under reconstruction due to hurricane damage and is expected to open in Nov 05. When the Raptor is completed the Eagle is slated for reconstruction which should fix a lot of the problems I will outline below. The course has a great layout in a woods setting with good sized fairways on most holes. Hurricane Isabel did a number on some of the fairways which now suffer from bad drainage and poor grass condition/coverage. The quality of the grass outside of these poor spots would typically be defined as fair, with a few holes qualifying as having good fairways. The rough is not very thick and is cut rather low so it doesn’t punish the stray drives, however fairway bunkers can be found on every par 4 or higher except for holes 17 and 18, with hole 18 having the only true water hazard causing you to pull back if you drive 250+. The greens are also in need of repair, suffering from “patchy” grass. It is often the case when your putt is dead on and inches from the cup it is deflected slightly to either side because of a transition of grass levels. There are also a couple of holes with a decent size tree on either side of the green causing tricky approach shots if your drive strays too far in the rough on that side. The cost of the course is reasonable, especially for military or federal employees. For non-employees it is $20 to walk 18 and carts are $10 for everyone. A federal employee can walk 18 for $14 and after 3pm that drops to $7. I believe military prices are similar to that of federal employees. Overall I recommend this course to military and federal employees who can benefit from the lower price, for non-employees a better cost option can be found at The Woodlands. The course is not in the best shape due to hurricane damage, however it is a great value if you can get the reduced prices and the layout/difficulty makes it worth playing multiple times.

Similar Products Used:

The snack bar offers a decent variety of food selections that are good and the pro-shop has a decent selection of merchandise to choose from. The driving range is fair, it is a great value (can buy tokens in $1 increments which provides about 20 balls) and has mats you can hit from, which plenty of people choose to do since it is difficult to find a decent patch of grass to hit from, more often it is hitting from dirt.
