We played Virginia National this morning and will not go back. This course should be closed. There are 4 greens so overgrown with crabgrass, they are unplayable. The course is in very poor condition. The employees were ALL very unfriendly and downright rude. I cannot believe the staff did not mention how poor the conditions were.

Customer Service

The staff was very rude, unfriendly, and not helpful

I went to Virginia National after recieving a "Free" green fees for your birthday promotion. It was a 20$ cart fee which I expected, still relatively cheap for the area.
Negatives:The course was in pitiful shape, especially the back nine. The rough was far too high with weeds (not even grass) and bees everywhere. The greens were destroyed on about 14 of the 18 holes...brown, holes, bees and muddy (it hadn't rained in several days). I had to tee off well in front of or behind the tee markers because of how bad shape they were in and lots of uneven lies on the teebox (my pet peeve).
Positives: The staff was super friendly and personable. The course yardages were well marked and the fairways were fair. Some absolutely STRIKING scenery.

Some Gimmicky Holes if you like that sort of thing. 168 yard par 3 well downhill. Nowhere to miss.

Customer Service

The first time that I visited this course was in April 2008. I live about 10 minutes away. Because I am a new golfer, I was really thrilled and impressed with the scenery by the river. After playing different courses and then going back to Virginia National this weekend, I no longer had the "newbie" awstruck feeling. $84 is the "prime" weekend rate. Due to our schedules, and the addicting need to get on a local course, we sucked up the high fees. Here is the cause of my disappointment and feeling of not getting my money's worth.

1) A good portion of the greens were in poor shape. Holes 13 and 14 were horrible. Brown patches of dirt and sand mix made it impossible to get a reasonable read on ball speed. When the ball hit these spots, the ball ran like it was going across a linoleum kitchen floor.
2) We counted 6 ball cleaning stations for 18 holes. 4 of them were BONE dry, and the 2 that had water smelled like sewage.
3)While teeing up near the river, 4 (illegal I assume) immigrants were walking the cart path with coolers and fishing gear. LIKE IT WAS A PUBLIC WALKWAY FOR FISHING THE RIVER! They were just talking and walking like we weren't even there.
4) Tee boxes were in sorry shape. Now I know that as the season moves on, they get chewed up but, patches of clover and even Dandilions show me a complete lack of effort. (And remember...the prime time weekend rate is $84.)

Take advantage of Evening rates after 3pm. $30 I think. Even their Twilight rates are more than this course is worth. $59 between 1-3pm.

Customer Service

Not bad. They greet you with a cart when you pull into the parking lot, and take it from you when your round is complete.

A gem of a golf course that get little notice (or play) due to it's out-of-the-way location.

A very interesting, fair, and scenic layout that plays along the Shenandoah river and up into an adjoining mountainside. Two holes have an elevation drop that must be 80 feet on the tee shot (one is a par-3).

Course conditions are usually very good, but maintenance (mowing, bunker raking, etc.) can lag at times. There is new ownership that has not yet gotten maintenance to the high level of the previous owner. Greens that once were the among the best in the area are not only average.

Great value for the price.

Customer Service

Maybe I was expecting too much from the reviews, but my friend and I didn't think much of this course. The front nine are boring and too tightly spaced. Fairways bump into each other at times. And the fairways and greens were awful: huge bare spots. It was wet when I played, and the course is built on a river, so it doesn't drain terribly well.

However, the back nine were fun. There were a few holes that made the course worth playing.

I just don't know why this course has gotten such high ratings.

I had a membership at this course last year. It is a phenomenal golf course and a great value. $35 twilight during the week for a spectacular golf course in spectacular shape, with spectacular views. I couldn't wait to get here every day and play it. Search for my picture of the 14th hole here. Great vista of the surrounding areas. Definitely a must play!

Outstanding course....Very tight, lost a few balls, but extremely well kept. Views are outstanding, and there are some creative holes bordering the Shennandoah River and running up the side of the mountains. Even if you didn't golf, just riding a cart around would feel like a nature hike! Staff was great and new clubhouse is nice (this is a relatively new course that feels like a classic.)

Customer Service

Very good

Nice layout, with some great views on the back 9. Local knowledge is important. Every putt breaks towards the Shenadoah River, even when they don't look like they do. Nice maintenance, but rather pricey for it's location.
