While the course is very lovely. The owner of this course overcrowds his golf course and upon receiving complaints kicks out the smaller parties to retain as much money as possible. He is rude and insulting. Do not go!

My brother, who has played this course well over 20x with family and friends, and myself(a beginner) got a noon tee time, showed up a few minutes early and were immediately told during check in by the owner that 24 people were behind us and had been waiting for us to arrive. AT 12:07, 7 minutes into our game, and on the 2nd stroke of a par 5 the owner came over and told us that the people behind us are complaining about us taking too long and that we are obviously not skilled enough golfers to keep up. I asked him how long it should take to complete the first 5 par hole of his course and he became very irritated and said that no more than 10 minutes to get from hole to hole. (So I suppose an 18 hole game should take about 180 minutes or 3 hours exactly, probably less as this was a par 5 and I would imagine a par 3 would be quicker.). He then told us that he is a pro and he can tell we will take too long and that he likes to ski but is not a pro so he doesn't ski the "black diamond slope." He then pulled his golf cart next to us for our next swing and said he would watch us to determine if we were good enough to continue on the course. At this point we asked for our money back and I asked him his name. He said "Mark Lambert, and I own this course so what are you going to do." I asked him for a card or if he could write it down so I would have the spelling properly when I reviewed his course and he said "I can't write. And you are out of line." I have never dealt with poorer customer service in my life nor been treated so hostile.

Apparently Nansemond River Golf Club is a "black diamond slope" and only for golf pros, you may be hovered over and reviewed on your skill level by the owner and if you are a small party you may be asked to leave as he overcrowds his course and then does damage control by kicking off less profitable parties. I, an admitted beginner, but none of my friends and family who are experienced golfers and frequented this course in the past will never give another penny to this business.

We then went to Cypress Creek Golf Course, got a tee time and played a wonderful 9 holes there, finished a little under 2 hours, and met an extremely kind man who checked us in and out. We encountered groups of golfers at the club house, a group of two other pro golfers who we let play through and were very nice, and were welcomed and enjoyed everyone's company. I highly recommend this Cypress Creek Golf Course. They were 30% as crowded as Nansemond and still had us wait 30 minutes or so for our game as they "refuse to ruin everyone's game by overcrowding their course." I could not agree more. Cypress Creek Golf Course is the place to be.

Very interesting design and well maintained. Number 13 is special, Par 5 627 yds, has two greens. What a monster. Every hole was exciting. Don't play the blue or gold tees unless you can flat out bust it. Early bird was $31 including a cart, a real deal.

Customer Service

I PLAYED IN JULY 2001. COURSE WAS WELL WORTH THE FEE. GREENS WERE ALL EXCELLENT. NOT TOO TRICKED UP. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME TO PLAY THERE. AND I WILL GO BACK. THE COURSE MARSHAL FOR THE DAY I PLAYED WAS A VERY HELPFUL OLDER MAN. NOT LIKE AT ALOT OF "OTHER" COURSES. EVEN THE BEVERAGE LADY WAS NICE. ALL IN ALL A VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE THERE.

Shoot in the 70s

This was my second time around. Played it once on a 100 degree day and again yesterday on a 50 degree day with a cold wind blowing hard out of the north.

Either way, this is a great golf course. Fairways were over-seeded for the winter and had plenty of roll despite a hard rain the night before. Greens were firm and rolled quite well.

Can be played anywhere from 5600 to 7300 yards. From the tips, driver/3 wood is necessary on all but one par 3. Hitting approach into #5 is intimidating...nearly soiled myself.

River views are aplenty and the current lack of on course home development makes you feel like you are getting away from it all.

Staff was great. Snack bar staff wanted to close the bar at nightfall and go home even though we were ready to drink more...guess I cant blame them for wanting to go home.

Snack bar was classy and comfortable. Help was friendly. Chili dog on the turn hit the spot. Expensive soft drinks- but cheap refills make it worth the price. Beer sold in long neck bottles in snack bar was ice cold and hit the spot. Pro shop merchandise was outrageously overpriced. Classic Foot Joys for $229.00??? I like my feet...but they aint worth that!
