I guess this is what they describe as a "tricked up" golf course. I recall two tee shots that were not blind. Forced layups on many holes, don't even bother pulling driver. Many holes with uneven lies in the fairway after good shots. I understand a tough golf course, I don't understand a golf course that still penalizes good, or decent, shots. They had just aerated so I can't really comment on greens conditions. Lumpy teeboxes on several holes were out of place, fairways were decent.

While the course was exceptionally challenging for a player of my caliber, I enjoyed playing it. There were perhaps too many holes where one had to hit blind shots.

Customer Service

We played on a very hot and humid afternoon on Sat., August 1st. The water jugs on the back nine were all empty; and the refeshment cart failed to make an appearance on these holes.

This is my favorite VA course, since moving to WMSBURG. This course requires a number of rounds to learn one's way around it. The greens are usually quick and in decent shape. In typical STRANTZ style, there are some tricked up holes and some with false fronts and hidden approach shots. Blind tee shots are also prevalent, but after a few rounds are easily figured out. The purchase of a yardage book is a must to really get a feel for what lies ahead

Customer Service

Always good, I have gotten to know some of the staff and they are exemplary

Playing Stonehouse once was enough. A gimmicky golf course with far too many blind tee shots followed by blind approach shots. A number of the tee boxes and greens were stressed out with bare spots due to the summer heat. #1 green was over run with goose grass. Two of the par 3 holes were spectacular, with long carries to large greens.

Customer Service

Satisfactory.

Traditions course. Much like Royal New Kent, but not as good overall. Greens are always good. Many blind tee shots. Fairways are moderately open (RH golfers can slice/fade)and be okay with most of the longer holes. Slow play. Fairly long from the back tees. Very Hilly. No even lies in the fairways.

Customer Service

good

Have played Tidewater courses for over 20 yrs. and this is one of the best. Hold on to your hat, the par 3's on the back will take your breath away. Alot of trees down due to Hurricane Isabell but dosn't really detract from the beauty of the course. Best to play it the first time with a member as there are alot of blind shots. A must play when in Va.

Customer Service

Staff was very accomadating. Made you feel welcomed.

This course is the bomb! It test the limits on how you play a golf hole. This course willmake you take blind tee shots where you dont even know where you going! Also it will make you hit out of bunkers that are more then thirty feet below the green! Boy this is a tough course!

Customer Service

Great! they treat you like you the best of the best golfers in the world and you are there #1 priority!

Wow! I''ve played this course twice now and it''s easily the most fun, best maintained, and most challenging course in Virginia. I was a little skeptical about the mountain course claim since the course is in Tidewater but I am a believer now. The course will challenge you both mentally and physically. There is no way you could walk this course but you’ll get plenty of exercise when you ride. No water hazards at all on this one but some of the bunkers could swallow up a house. The course is not crowded at all and the green fees are a great value considering the quality of the course.

Customer Service

Pretty good.

Shoot in the 80s

Played 5/12/2001 in the mid morning.

An excellent course that is in an area of great courses. As it is less than 40 minutes from Richmond, it was a delight to be able to play on a Saturday morning without the course being extremely crowded. The first few holes provided a great warmup for the day as you were able to play to your strengths or weaknesses appropriately. I just loved the directional poles that were located in most fairways as I easily steered my drives toward them.

The mounding fairways, creeks weaving through the courses, and only a few narrow tree lined fairways, this course is a great mixture of tough and easy holes that can give confidence to any golfer to score well on a hole or two. Each approach to the green provides a risk and reward opportunity. Very scenic woodlands course with a few home sites along the trees.

Customer Service

Great staff that was helpful all along the way. I believe you can always gauge the customer service is when you show up as a single without a tee time.

Shoot in the 80s

This is an unbelieveable course. One of the most memorable I have ever played. It is similar in experience to the Royal New Kent (see my review there)

You will need the pictured yardage book from the pro-shop as 99% of the shots are blind

Oh yea, In '98 - '99 there was some important archeological dig there. They found something very valuable, but I can't remember what.
