Shoots in the 90s

Played High Cedars 10/05/2002. Green fees are a liitle bit pricey. The fairways were nice and the greens are maintained. Pace of play was average. They should lower their green fees.

I think High Cedar is a good course overall. Under new management they are returning the course to it's original par 72 layout, and building a huge new pro-shop and rest.
In addition, they have pulled the tees back on a few par fours and added a brand new putting green. This course has all kinds of holes and should be enjoyable for all levels. If your on your game you can shoot well here but if not beware of the HIGH CEDARS. Some would say the best thing about this course is the wonderful views of Mt. Rainer but in my opinion it is the GREENS. These greens seem to run true all year around and if your ball is not dropping in you can only blame yourself. Hope to see you there.

High Cedars is a good, solid public course that everyone will enjoy playing, especially if you enjoy walking and nice scenery. Better players will be challenged by some nice long par fours and relatively small greens, while high-handicappers will appreciate the generous fairways, minimal rough and limited number of severe hazards.

The course plays about 6,400 yards from the back tee with a slope of only 114. From the whites it's about 6,000 yards with a below-average slope of 111. When I see a low slope rating, I tend to picture a boring, short, poorly maintained course at the low-end of the golf food-chain. But High Cedars bucks the trend: it's interesting (in a traditional sense), nicely maintained, and fun.

High Cedars includes a nice mix of short and long holes, so you'll use every club in your bag. The only thing boring about High Cedars is that the course is almost entirely flat, but never-ending views of Mount Rainier more than make up for that minor shortcoming.

The fairways on the longer holes are wide and forgiving, so you can satisfy the urge to grip it and rip it. But there are also some short par fours that call for more strategy. A few of the par fours are nearly driveable, but others take all of two good shots to reach in regulation.

I especially like the variety of the par threes. The second hole plays about 150 yards, slightly downhill to a well-bunkered green -- a perfect seven-iron shot for most players. The 4th hole plays about 125 yards to a green that is guarded by cedar trees. At 210 yards, the 11th gives even the better players a difficult challenge. And the 175-yard 17th features a sloping green that makes three a good score for any player.

Conditions are generally very good-to-excellent from tee to green. Fairways are well-maintained and rough is not punishing. The greens are firm, and putt true, but they have enough contour to make them fun. And, although the course does get soggy in mid-winter, it is enjoyable year 'round.

High Cedars is a great place to play if your group has a mix of players with different abilities.

Nice covered driving range (Mats); excellent executive nine is a great place for practice; nice practice green (but skip the putting course); the clubhouse is nothing fancy, but folks are friendly.

High Cedars is, perhaps, the best overall value and course in the Pacific Northwest.

Facing Mt. Rainer and integrating mountain streams and wonderful meadows, High Cedars is a joy to experience.

It takes many, many rounds to learn the nuances of this course. Once assimilated, they are only the basic text for a more advanced learning experience.

Best played in the dry months, High Cedars is a Pacific Norhtwest gem. Enjoy a multitude of times.

I have played High Cedars twice now and have enjoyed each outing. Although the course is rated as fairly easy the trees add a few challenges. The club often offers 2 for 1 coupons in the local guides, making the drive to Orting worth the time.
