Shoots in the 80s

I love this course. It was in the best condition of all the courses I played this winter/spring. Early May, the greens were perfect, and they are also tough. They have very fun challenging par 5s ( #7, 9, 14, and 18.) My group is rarely close to reaching them in two, particularly 18, and all greens are guarded. #1 & 7 look so innocuous, but for a variety of reasons, par is a really good score.

Shoots in the 70s

This course has been in poor condition the last 5 years. The original owners sold and it went downhill from there. Used to be one of the better public courses in western Washington, but no longer. Very wet with greens being in fair condition at best. Has a nice layout and practice area.

Shoot in the 80s

Western Washington is fortunate to have several great public golf courses that you can play for under $50. the Classic is one of those courses. I rank it on par with Kyak Point and Gold Mountain's Olympic Course as my favorite affordable places to play. All of the better players I know with agree, however, its not a very forgiving place for high handicap players.

The architect of this course deserves extra credit, because he created a remarkable course on a relatively boring piece of land. Elevation changes are minimal, but the architect made excellent use of the occasional high or low spot. And the second growth trees that frame many of the fairways aren't as dense as many Northwest courses, but they do manage to frame most of the holes nicely. The course layout is also relatively compact, but it never feels too tight or jammed together.

Though The Classic does not play exceptionally long (about 6,800 yards from the tips, 6,400 yards from the whites), some combination of sand traps, mounds, trees and rough come into play on every hole. Water comes into play on four or five holes as well. The par fives all measure over 500 yards from the white tees, giving an advantage to the long hitters, but many of the par fours are in the short-to-medium range, so players who approach the game more strategically have a chance to make some birdies, too.

From tee to green the conditions have been excellent every time I've played. The greens roll very true, and they're usually the fastest around, so you won't want to charge too many putts -- unless you like to three-putt, that is.

The Classic is a great place to see just how good your game really is, because it doesn't let you get away with many mistakes. At the same time, it's fun to play because every hole is fair, not punishing. While some courses boost their slope rating with excessive length, impossibly narrow fairways, or severe hazards, The Classic earns its rating (133 from the blues, 130 from the whites) without resorting to any trickery.
