Erin Hills Golf Course - Golf courses, Hartford, WI

DESCRIPTION

Erin Hills Golf Course rests on a 652-acre site in the small town of Erin, thirty-five miles northwest of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Regarded by enthusiasts as one of the best natural sites for a golf course in the United States, Erin Hills has received the unprecedented honor of being awarded a future USGA sanctioned event - the 2008 Women’s Amateur Public Links - before the course has even been seeded.

Inspired by the classic Scottish and Irish courses that were once built by horse-drawn plows, Erin Hills is environmentally friendly, with very minimal land development aside from the course itself. The different strikingly different holes are also highlighted by the majestic contours of the land that was naturally shaped by the glaciers thousands of years before. Little dirt was moved. The fairways and green sites remain virtually untouched, and dirt only needing to be moved on four of the course’s nineteen holes.

In January of 2007, Golf Magazine rated Erin Hills..."Best New Course of the Year".

It is almost impossible for me to believe that I played the same golf course-albiet several years apart-as the three others who posted reviews here. Erin HIlls-site of the 2017 US Open-is one of if not the finest finest course I have ever played. That list includes Whistling Straits, The Ocean Course at Kiawah, Harbor Town, The Players TPC to name just a few. Erin Hills is an extraordinary golf course that is a monstrous test. Every shot on every hole must be exact and the greens are lightening fast placing a huge premium on being on the right side of the hole. The ONLY "negative" thing I can say is that it is a fairly grueling walking experience so you best be in reasonable shape if you are fortunate enough to play this course.

Played the course on 10/7/09 and it was in horrible shape besides the greens. Weeds all over the place and alot of mud spots as well as spots where grass was overgrown. The bunkers were in terrible condition. When putting on the greens, the ball picked up some black substance that was not identifable.

Customer Service

No issues, was very good.

Value rating is poor. The overall rating I'd give is "Interesting". Played in Sept 2008 - still young. Fairways patchy. Course is on the gimmicky side - would not consider a top tier course.

If you do go, opt for the caddie. Course presents many blind shots, need to know and understand placement and target lines. One par 3 is basically in a hole / hollow - your target line is a rock in the middle of the fairway - can't see the green or any area around the green. Without a caddie, fear and uncertainty will join your group - they don't play through.

Greens are fast, several have tiers. Fringe is rough. Play is slow - groups spend much time searching in the fescue.

Again, if you go, get a caddie, and be prepared for a challenge and circus. You can hit what you think was a good shot, only to find that the fairway / green slants and throws your ball wayward. Of course the opposite occurs as well (hit what you think is a poor shot but it turns out), but in golf, the gods only allocate 3 of these per year. Save them for this course, you'll need them.

Erin Hills is a great course. It is all what they say it is, and it is one of the best courses I've ever been to. The course is well kept at all times, and the practice facilities are the best I've ever seen, and the club house reminds me that I'm in Ireland. The food was great and I'll hardly wait to go back there again. But I have to agree that the course isn't matured yet, but when it is matured, nothing will stop it.

Customer Service

I think that the customer service there is best I'd ever seen. The workers there are very, very nice and the caddies are up there with the best. And the amenities there has no comparison to any other golf course I've been to.

I would say the previous review I read was right on the money. The greens were in great shape- firm and fast- but the fairways were in need of some serious maturation. The first fairway in particular was a disaster area. I like the mix of holes, particulary the number of tee shots that played from high above the fairway. I didn't like the blind par 3 at all as well as the green on 15, which was way too gimmicky and severe. I thought holes 2-4 were excellent, #9 was extremely tough, and I enjoyed 11 and 12 as well. It would be interesting to see a high level event played here in the future, as with the numerous tee box opportunities on each hole the course could be played any number of ways- especially given the wind conditions each day.

Customer Service

We had a caddie, which is recommended for a first time player. He was extremely knowledgeable, worked hard, and very friendly. He helped out on the numerous blind shots and gave good advice on other hidden hazards, plus it made the walk much easier. I wish the course would not allow carts, as it would add to the natural feel of the whole golf experience.
The rest of the staff and amenities were great, and the guinness in the clubhouse bar afterwards was top notch (a must given the Irish angle the course is playing up). I would also agree, however, that it is a bit overpriced at this point given the conditioning of the course. Though I'm sure with the constant press it is receiving that it will only go up in price regardless of condition, so I would play it now before pricing gets totally out of control.

Never played it, but I attended a US Open at Shinnecock Hills and it reminded me of that course due to the rolling hills, links style, and minimalist design approach.

A good golf course on a great site, but still needs time to mature and be refined. The spectacular property would be fun to explore even without a golf course, with its rumpled hillocks, hollows, mounds, and kettle holes. The tumbling terrain makes for a fun round, both in watching the ball roll across the heaving ground and in requiring creative shotmaking skills from a variety of stances. Very little dirt was moved during construction, leading to the course’s billing as an exceptionally natural design. However, some of the more extreme natural features were incorporated as-is with sometimes goofy and borderline unfair results, especially on a handful of greens. Hiring a caddie would be a good idea for the first time visitor, as the yardage guide simply cannot point the proper line on many of the blind shots. Conditions were mixed: the greens were outstanding, rolling fast and true, but the fescue fairways were shaggy and patchy, still needing quite a bit of time to properly grow in. Despite not being crowded, pace of play was very slow due to the blind shots and time spent searching for balls in the tall fescue rough; a foursome should expect at least five hours to complete a round. Service was above average – friendly staff focused on the customer, a budding caddie program, and good food. At $150 it felt moderately overpriced, especially considering its current condition.
