Shoots in the 80s

seascape offers a nice test of golf and features tight fairways and tough greens. If you are able to hit a straight ball then you can score but if you go off the fairway you will spend many shots trying to recover and those shots add up quickly. The great equalizer are the greens which are very sloped and undulated. Three or four putts are not out of the question so you must be able to read greens well.

I don't know why people are being so negative about Aptos. I guess they must play Cypress and Pebble every day to be that dissapointed with this course. It's an enjoyable, albeit short, course that has a good variety of holes. Sure it's in bad condition in the winter, but they do the best that they can. I don't know why people are complaining about the par 3's either. The sixth is a solid mid-length par three that punishes anything short. The eighth is a really good short par three (it's a pitching or gap wedge) downhill to a two tiered green. Both par 3's on the back are solid as well. The holes are well laid out, although the routing of the holes could be improved if not for the houses surrounding the holes. There are some good risk-reward holes, some good birdie opportunities, and some really hard pars. You can hit every club in your bag and have a great time. It is overpriced on the weekends, but who wants to play then, anyways? After 4 p.m., it is only $25 on weekdays. After you round, there is a nice bar with good food and a great (repeat, great) room to hang out in. I don't know what everybody is complaining about, Aptos is an enjoyable, sometimes challenging course to play.

Maybe a "local" should chime in. The "over-the-hill" guys from San Jose shouldn't speak for the locals. Delaveaga IS a popular course but locals play it because it's cheap, not better. Seascape has great specials that allow for affordable play weekdays and weekends. All you have to do is get on their mailing list to play rounds as low as $32 with a cart. With several course choices for locals, we all cycle Seascape in during the year. Most of the courses in Santa Cruz suffer the winter rain season. The soil at Seascape isn't as sandy as the San Jose guys are used to so it drains much slower a stays wet longer

Customer Service

Frindly staff. I play there every six to eight weeks and the guys in the shop recognize me.

The other reviews here have it right. Way overpriced for what you are getting. Worst condition you can imagine in the winter/spring months. A couple years ago they tried giving away a free sleeve of topflights with every round to lure people in, but they were planted in the muck by the first hole. I would like to see the turf dug up one day here. There would be about 20 thousand balls buried in every fairway, dating back to the 1920's, along with a few dozen golf clubs, some old tires, maybe a body or two from golfers who got sucked down into the mire. To be fair, in the summer it is not bad, but again the price is completely unrealistic. Serious players around here never play this course. Try Delaveaga instead, for real golf.

The staff guys are ok

Range is bad. Buy a bucket of balls, throw half of them back due to wear and general un-hittability. American Golf Corp, in my mind, has a reputation for running courses into the ground and overcharging.

I've be playing at Seascape for quite a while and have seen the front nine and the back nine switch places 3 times. No matter what they do it doesn't help. The ground is soaking wet and the rough is not maintained at all. Many of the fairways are severely sloped or placed in deep "U-shaped" valleys. Par 3's have no personality and in some cases are laughable. The course has never been in worse shape. Very close friends of mine live within walking distance of the course and refuse to play there any more.

Aptos is fun. It's not too nice, hard or beautiful, but it is fun.

Customer Service

The customer service is pretty good, but they have trouble staying on time. It's a five hour round any way you slice it.

The range is pretty bad (mats and no woods allowed). The clubhouse is nice, as is the restaurant.

This course used to be great until American Golf took over the management. They never close this course in the winter which at times they should. Sometimes a canoe would be better than a golf cart as the fairways are U shaped and hold water like lakes and rivers. Then need to go to soft spikes only and take better care of the greens and tee boxes. Also it's a bit pricey for what you get.
