Played on a Monday afternoon and paid $30 twilight rate for a nonresident. Old school design w/ some tight fairways and small greens. Some elevation changes. Course was in really good shape; well manicured tee boxes, fairways and greens. New irrigation system recently installed. Good job by grounds crew keeping the course well irrigated without overdoing it. I was impressed with the overall condition of a popular muni course that sees lots of play. Driving range was closed for repair. Good overall experience.

Customer Service

Good. No problems.

I play this course all the time. It is not super long, nor is it short, but your I find it a very challenging course. I have only played with one person in many rounds that has broken 80 on the course. I useually shoot in the low 80's there. The number 1 handicap hole is #3 the toughest 310 or so yards in San Diego, even Torrey does not have as challenging of a short par 4 as does Balboa. The greens are pretty decent and the bunkers are light on the sand side, which makes me want to avoid them more.

Customer Service

The cafe is great for a quick bite and a smile.

One of my favorite local courses. This is an "old style" course, not too long, small greens. Stray here and you can score some big numbers quickly. Usually only in fair condition however the greens are almost always good.

Customer Service

In my opinion, Balboa Park offers the best value in San diego. If you reside in San Diego, an anual $12 resident card will grant you green fees of $19 weekdays $21 weekends and $10.50 twilight. This is not the best maitained course in San Diego, but keep in mind that this is a municipal course which see's heavy traffic during all seasons. Balboa in not a long course but don't let the slope rating fool you. Accuracy, not length is at a premium here. The greens can be hard and fast without much undulation, but putt relatively true. While not the worst course to walk, much of the course winds in and out of canyons that may grant a lucky bounce or two.

The course isn't maintained that well, they certainly are not the most challenging holes, and much of the area of Balboa Park that is covered by the course isn't the most scenic, but this course is great. Its purpose is not to be a major tourism draw or a stop along the tour. Its purpose is to be a fun local municipal course. It is regulation length and make-up and it is a rare time when someone comes off the course complaining. Its not Torrey Pines or some other major patch of grass, but its purpose is a good time for the local golfer and it nails it.
