The strengths of this course are definitely things to keep in mind each time. If you are a long ball hitter, you need to find the fairway. Miss the fairway and you find rough that makes any "touch" shot more than unpredictable. You can just as easily catch a flyer and you can a fluffer. Miss the green long on many of the par 3 and you have a very difficult chip/pitch coming back. A majority of the reason is that the grain oftentimes works against you when you chip making fat shots commonplace. If putting is your strength, then good luck to you on keeping this confidence. Grain plays such a big part on reading theses greens. And once you get this down, try getting accustomed to the different grass on a couple of greens. (Tip: most greens break toward the west side of diamond head). The last strength to consider on this course is the unpredictable winds. When the winds pick up the tend to swirl (esp. on the #8 par 3). Its commong to hit into the wind on one tee box and then go the opposite way, STILL HITTING INTO THE WIND. (Tip: hit it low)

Major weakness is that the course is short. All par 5s are reachable in 2. Most would debate about hole #13, a major dogleg right that finds most golf balls in the water hazard. But I've found myself on or around the green after a good faded tee shot and solid 5-iron. Scary though because fall short and you may find one of 2 bunkers guarding this mid-size green. Good course management really simplifies many of the holes here (as with any other course). For instance, hole #7 has a pond that seems to employ a black hole at its bottom. Unless you draw or aim on the left side, you can easily find the drink. Solution: aim for the #1 fairway! You don't have to worry about working a fade just right or driving through the green. Hit the #1 fairway and you have a clear shot for this undulating green. (Tip: try your best to be on the same tier as the pin)

At first glance this course is unimpressive. The course is entirely flat, there are few undulating greens, the fairways are relatively wide, the water hazards are unintimidating, and the trees aren't as dense as many other local courses. Yet after playing this course a few times, I've gained a newfound respect for this park in the middle of a concrete jungle.

Customer Service

Don't expect a fond "aloha" when you approach the Starters window. Perhaps its the sheer number of people they see, or the demands of the job, or the fact that they have a captive audience, but the starters are just plain grumpy. When you speak to the starter you have a distinct feeling that you are expendable, meaning you are not valued as a customer. Why? perhaps because the are 30 other people behing you trying to get on and your money doesn't really matter. There is always the guy behind you. Do something wrong on the course and you may have a tongue lashing from one of the groundskeepers (doesn't matter if english isn't your first language, and even if you do, good luck trying to understand pidgin english). In their defense, there are a couple of guys that work in the starters office that are very fair and friendly, informing you of your approximate time and status. Unfortunately they don't seem to be their as often as the woman and other middle-aged male. Oh! to pass the time interestingly, try to hang around the starters window and see how successful the "favored" clientele are at getting ahead of the line.

Quality "Muni" track that I had to play due to it's proximity to my hotel on Waikiki. Despite a reputation as being one of the MOST difficult courses to get on...I found it an easy wait on a mid-week and weekend basis.

This is one busy course, located right behind Waikiki. Tough to get a tee time, and sometimes too dry. Always flat. Not the best muni on Oahu; that distinction goes to West Loch.
