Shoots in the 80s

It is by far the most scenic and challenging golf course on the big island of Hawaii. The views are breathtaking. On many tee boxes, I just stood there looking down at the gorgeous pacific ocean, lost in thought and when I looked around, I would imagine what it would be like to build my dream house next to the tee box. For me, this course ranks number one on the big island. Number two would be Big Island country club, a Pete Dye course with target style golf.

Shoots in the 80s

I played this course early August 2003. This is a stunningly beautiful course. It is also far more interesting and scenic than Mauna Lani. It has far more undulations and ocean views than the Mauna Lani. If you only have time to play one course on the Big Island, make it the Mauna Kea. They have a very good pro-shop too.

Customer Service

Shoot in the 80s

This is one of the classic and best courses in Hawaii. It was built in the early 1960s by Robert Trent Jones, who revolutionized the building of golf courses using crushed lava as the base here at Mauna Kea.

It follows RTJ's philosophy of "easy bogey, tough par," with a series of elevated greens which fall off on the sides and some forced carries to fairways. Once you get used to the Bermuda grass breaks, putting should not be a big problem on this course, although they can get the greens rolling pretty fast.

The third hole is a par-three that plays over a Pacific inlet and is one of the most beautiful holes in golf.

Overall, one of Hawaii's top three courses year in and year out.
