Cleveland CG10 Black Pearl

Summary:
I have read several reviews on the CG 10’s and people have commented they are terrible compared to the Vokey’s, (spin, poor control, and spin etc,,). I really feel these are people’s preferences over one manufacture to another and not really how the club performs. 2 seasons ago I purchased 56 and 60 Vokey wedges to replace my 588 RTG’s, after 4 rounds I went back to the 588 RTG’s as I could not get comfortable with the Vokey’s at all. They felt heavy, really muted feel and inconsistent on the yardage between the 56 and 60 degree.

Time came up for me to replace my wedges (56 and 60 degree) this season. I was pretty confident that I was going to get the new Cleveland CG12’s Zip groves wedges but read a few articles that said they did not play as well as the CG10 wedges. I decided to go with the CG10 56 and 60 in the black pearl finish.

All I can say is WOW I am happy I went with CG10’s. These wedges are absolutely fantastic in terms of feel, control, spin and distance. Even the looks of these clubs promotes so much confidence and they look really nice in the black finish. In terms of the finish wearing, yes it does, but I am not hitting the ball with the sole of the club so what do I really care about that?

FEEL – The CMM metal really does offer a soft feel and offers great feed back on how you hit the ball and where you hit it. For the 1st time I could tell how clean I hit the ball before looking at the club face.

CONTROL - was very similar to the 588 RTG’s, my quarter, half and full swings were pretty similar (minus a few extra yards on the distance). Also being able to hop and stop or spin the ball back depending on the swing I took is the control I really want.

SPIN - was out of this world, simply the best out of any wedges I played. I was backing up the ball 10-12 feet on full swings and the ball was checking up great on the softer shots just like I wanted.

DISTANCE – These seem play a little longer then my 588 RTG’sand Vokey’s….. although it could just be that I have a lot more confidence taking a hard swing with these clubs and that produces the extra yardage?

After 4 rounds with the 56 and 60 I went and purchased a 52 gap wedge in the CG 10’s, which performs just as well as the other two I have.

I would recommend these clubs to anyone and now is a great time to grab them as they are discontinued and prices have dropped (I think golf town has them as low as 118.00 now).

Just to summarize these are fantastic clubs and I think anyone would be please with the performance of them. Ignore the comments of others saying they do not match up to Vokey’s, that is a false comment based on preference not performance. They play as well as any Vokey wedge I have ever used.

Medium bounce, 56 and 60

Summary:
This has great performance. The ball stops nicely with the spin, and can work the ball out of any lie. The 60 degree version makes bunker shots easy. The 56 degree has amazing control. But the finish wears off quickly. Buy the wedge without the finish.

CG10 56 medium bounce

Summary:
Great club. Excellent for just about any lie. Great grip. The finish, although it is wearing out on the sole, is beautiful.

Cleveland CG10 54* Mid Bounce

Summary:
I recieved this club as a Christmas present in the year of 2004. When I finally got around to using it, I was very happy with the feel, accuracy, and overall playability of the club. But now it is the summer of 2006 and the club has significant signs of wear. The finish has completly come off of the sole of the club and has started to rust. Also the groves can hardly produce spin any more. A club of this caliber that costs $120 should last more than 1 1/2 years.

CG10 Black Pearl, 58*, 2-dot

Summary:
The 58* version of the CG10 Black Pearl line was the equipment surprise of my 2005 season.

I bought this club together with a 52* Black Pearl. I only put the GW into play at first because at the time, I was still in love with my Cobra Trusty Rusty LW that had been in my bag for five years. Admittedly, I was luke-warm with the GW. Nice, solid, but no better for me than the club I was already playing.

I was going to list both for resale on ebay when I decided to give the 58* a shot. Awesome. Immediately, I took to this club. Great weight, balance, feel. Very solid, great from the sand, nice soft feel, excellent distance control. The whole package. In one round, it supplanted my beloved Trusty Rusty and has remained very safe in the bag through 30 or so rounds through the end of the season.

I can't whole-heartedly recommend the entire line to anyone being that the GW couldn't gain starting honors in my bag, but the 58* is something special, in my opinion.

I'd give the GW four out of five stars, but the LW... 10. :-)
