Callaway FT-i Drivers

Callaway FT-i Drivers

DESCRIPTION

The Callaway Golf® FT-i and FT-i Tour Drivers represent a quantum leap in driver design. To exploit our proprietary Fusion® Technology — the superior weight-shifting science developed by Callaway Golf that uses multiple materials in clubhead construction — the design demanded a new shape. With the revolutionary 460cc Complete Inertial Design, the FT-i Driver pushes the boundaries of shape, of our imagination, of the rules. This design precisely positions weight to the extreme corners of the clubhead, producing the highest Moment of Inertia of any Callaway Golf driver, resulting in unparalleled forgiveness. Our largest, most robust CT/VFT Titanium cup face is designed to the legal limit as defined by the USGA Characteristic Time test, resulting in increased ball speed, distance and forgiveness. Also incorporated into the FT-i Driver is the OptiFit™ Weighting System that produces three center of gravity configurations: Draw, Neutral and Fade, enabling golfers to choose a combination to best suit their individual game. The FT-i Tour Driver features a slightly open face angle for a look preferred by more accomplished players. Designed by the industry’s leading minds, the FT-i Driver will break barriers of performance, distance and forgiveness.

460cc Complete Inertial Design
Positions discretionary weight to the extreme corners of the clubhead, raising the MOI for unparalleled resistance to twisting both horizontally and vertically, providing forgiveness on shots hit all over the face.

OptiFit Weighting System
Enables golfers to customize their driver by giving them three different CG locations to choose from in most lofts: Draw for promoting a draw or reducing a slice/fade; Neutral for maximum workability; or Fade for promoting a fade or reducing a hook/draw. Fusion Technology
Proprietary technology creates maximum perimeter weighting and more discretionary weight for precise positioning of the CG and exceptional stability on off-center hits, enabling ball flight customization for optimal individual performance. CT/VFT Titanium Cup Face
Modified version of VFT® Technology in which face thicknesses are designed specifically to maximize performance under the new USGA Characteristic Time test, resulting in our largest most robust face for increased ball speed on shots hit all over the face.

Carbon Composite Body
The material used to make the body is significantly lighter than titanium, allowing Callaway Golf engineers to move discretionary weight where it is needed most, resulting in better stability and distance.

Just started getting serious on golf almost 3 months ago and been practicing almost everyday. I started an Iron set on X tour Callaway. Loved it! But every time I starts on the Drivers then I have this big problem. A Big slice! A slice like a ball boomerang. In a good way I can catch the ball then hit it again and again. LOL. Then I got some very good advised from a strangers in driving range and correct my swing. Now with the Proper Grip and Swing the FT-i regular flex also made it so easy for me. I like the feel compare to the other drivers. Now I've been hitting 220+ straighter and still improving.

A nice big piece of junk with alot of hype and marketing, The sound everybody talks about is a dead thud. It slices just like every other driver.off center hit feel like every other driver, very over priced for junk. WARNING... The tennis manufacturers are making junk racquet too.,because they know we are a sucker born every minute. it's ashame we americans are stooping so low in every respect. The next thing is plastic shafts which the mfg. will market as high tech polymers, another good word for plastic. and of course there can't be new technology because the usga say's the "cor" limit is .830 where do you go from here?

I was able to play 3 rounds with a borrowed FTi set to draw. The club was very forgiving and I was so impressed I ordered one. I found that the club hits the ball higher than other clubs so I would recommend trying a lower loft club.
Now for the not so good news------ After about 6 or 7 rounds the head cracked along the heel of the club. And,Just hitting the club, and it's tin-can sound, make one wonder if this club will survive the test of time. It is also very over priced so you may want to develop a wait and see approach. I did not gain any distance with this club, in fact, it was shorter that my old Wilson driver.
It may not be for everyone but it is a fun club to hit so try one it may be the club for you. Just don't pay to much for one -- it may not last.

Model Reviewed: Callaway FTi Driver 10 deg

For the last 3 year I have always pulled out my trusty 3 iron and hit it up the middle of most fairways as I have always struggled to hit drivers accurately. I tried alot of different brands ( borrowing most of my friends drivers for a test run ) but still struggled for consistency. About 3 months ago I went to the Callaway performance center and tried the FT5 and FTi as well as all the irons, X20 & tours, BB & FT's Didn't like any of the irons, the FT5 was good but not perfect, then enter this square ugly looking thing and I couldn't believe how accurate I was with good distance ( 220 - 230 meters / 105mph club head speed ) on the computer with low side spin. Still not fully convinced I went to a local golf shop and tried it on there computer and it was showing very similar results so I bought it. The next day I went and played a round with my mates and they couldn't believe I was using a driver and hitting it so straight. I was loosing a bit of distance compared to my mates ( using a Callaway Tour 56 ball ) but then tried a Pro V1x and instantly found 15 meters. I have also tried the Tour i but I get the best results with a Pro V1x and I am yet to try a Pro V1. That day I only missed 1 fairway and that was only by 2 meters. Since then I have played about 10 rounds of golf and rarely miss a fairway with an average distance of about 220. This club has completely changed my game as it is making it alot easier for me to make green in regulation and I have seen my handicap come down by 8 shots.

I know this club will not work for everyone as I have had 4 of my friends use it, 2 of them hit accurately and 2 of them don't, but for me it is amazing, the confidence I have on the tee is something I thought I would never experience with a driver.

Two things that I am sure you will not like. The sound even out of the middle of the club is at best ordinary, ( ( but the feel is still good ) and the price is insane. No matter how good the club is, to charge $650 australian dollars for a driver should be illegal!!!

I have also been able to work the ball around which has surprised me as I was told that you can't. Drawing or Fading has not been a problem for me ( I should mention my setting on the driver is the neutral & regular flex shaft ) just enough to keep it on the fairway.

What makes no sense to me is why PM has so much trouble driving on the tour when he could use an FTi?

Customer Service

The performance center was ok, not worth the money I had a free voucher, found it hard to get feedback out of the pro during testing.

On my 1. round with my new driver it made a sound from inside the head as if something was loose.
And on hole 16 half the head flew of... Fortunately nobody was hit as it flew into a group of trees.
When I tried it, before ordering it, Í hit it very well.

Why do I like this driver?
Accuracy: It is really straight, even off-centre hits go very straight with minimal shape
Launch Angle: This club launches the ball very high with low spin. Consider trying a lower loft than you would usually try.
Looks: Many people may differ, but I love the square look. It feels to my like the square flat face encourages a nice sweeping driver swing
Shaft: I chose the standard fit Fujikura Speeder Stiff shaft and it has improved my accuracy dramatically. There are many shaft options, get the right one for you.
Custom fitting: Having the correct shaft and grip size makes a huge difference

Dislikes
Price: The club is expensive!
Sound: The sound is something to get used to (but I am being very critical)
Workability: Difficult to draw/fade (perhaps it is not such a bad thing if it just goes straight)
I eventually chose the neutral option, but saw very little difference in ball flight when hitting the draw and fade bias options

Conclusion
With out a doubt I am driving the ball better than EVER before. This club will not appeal to everybody, but for me it is perfect. However, it over priced in my opinion, but is there really a price on a long straight drive? I can’t wait to hit it again on Saturday.

Been playing for 5 years. Handicap's reduced in stages 28-24-20-16-13. My swing is owned. I understand it and work well with it. I know when it's right and i nknow what to do when it isn't. Swing averages 98mph, ball speed averages 142mph and ball spin vaires on the driver being used but is around 3200rpm. Launch angle is usually between 12 and 14 degrees and I constantly fight a slightly open face on impact. I've owned 4 fti drivers. They're so much better than any other driver that it's almost cheating. My latest one is 9.5 degrees with the stiff 686 shaft set to neutral. Simply put, I don't miss faiways with this baby and my carry is around 230 to 240 - roll outs take it to between 240 and 275. If my iron play was better I'd be Cat 1. Can't recommend this driver too highly. If you're serious about your golf - there really isn't a better driver out there (I've owned the FT3, FT5, Hi-bore, R7, 905T, etc etc). Absolutely amazing forgiveness and carry. If Tiger played with this club he'd win 20 tournaments a season.

Model Reviewed: FT-I

Have struggled with moving the ball too much from right to left. To the point of no longer being able to consistently hit a fade. I've been playing the Ping G-5 (great club) for the last few months and have been in the left side of the fairway at best and trouble left more often. Decided to try an FT-I (pre-owned for just $200, nice deal if you can get it)9.5 degree with the speeder 686 x-stiff shaft. After three rounds one thing is clear, this club will keep you in the fairway. I found more in 3 rounds than in my last 10 with the G5. I mentioned the shaft because it is a key component in distance and ball flight. The speeder 686 is a low ball shaft that seems to be a good combination with the deep CG FT-I head. My ball flight is similar to my G5 (10.5 Aldila NVS 65 stiff). So far it does appear that my maximum distance has gone down, but my average has gone up. I am tending to drive the ball 240 to 260 in the fairway vs closer to 280 maximums with the G5 but quite a few shots that are considerably less than that. I plan to test out on a launch monitor to find out if my backspin is too high.

I consider myself a pretty good ball striker and went to a fit lab to be fitted for a new driver or new shaft for my current driver. What I found was very low backspin with my current driver -- approximately 1700 rpm. I had good launch angle and sidespin rates as well as good ball speed -- 155-160 mph.

As it turns out the FT-I was very well suited to my needs. Many of the previous reviews indicate straight shots and distance loss. My new FT-I with the Speeder 686 shaft is not only straighter -- yes, the square technology works -- but longer than my previous driver because the spin rate is now more "optimal" at 2300 rpm. I asked my fitter how many people have "too low" of back spin and he said it was maybe 1 in 4 or 5. So, the majority of players may experience distance loss with the FT-I as it does produce more backspin. (Note the addition of the Low CG model to combat this.)

The feel is solid and I can work the ball a little with the Neutral model. The sound does take some getting used to...

Lastly, it's a bit spendy but I had tournament winnings to spend. Otherwise I probably would have bought the R7 Superquad.

Customer Service

Excellent -- I ordered the FT-I with a custom shaft, the Speeder 686 from the Tour model, instead of the stock 586 and they delivered in about 1 week.

Similar Products Used:

R7 460 -- too low backspin. R7 Superquad -- good backspin (with weight configured for "low" ball flight) but not as forgiving.
